Even though the Korean War was a historical momentum stamped by the American patriotism against the menacing power of communism in American society, it has been a “Forgotten War” over the second half of the 20th century.
Unlike most of the wars occurred in the 20th century, the Korean War has barely been mentioned in the American literature. Thus, through the Useless Servants written by Ronaldo Hinojosa and A long way from Home written by Gordon Kahn, this research aims to find out the covert meaning of the Latin Americans’ participation in the Korean War and historical significance of the Korean War in the formation and development of the Chicano Movement in 1960. In general, the approach to the Korean War has been either approving the US patriotism by actively taking part in the Korean War or critically reviewing the Chicanos’ involvement in the US military action. It is noteworthy, then, that both works go beyond the traditional understanding of the Korean War in which it serves as a transition point of conscience of Latinos on the American nation. In other words, they show the formation of critical consciousness of Latinos that refers to the resistance to the dominant ideology in American society.

Resumen A pesar de que la Guerra de Corea fue un momento histórico estampado por el patriotismo estadounidense contra el poder amenazador del comunismo en la sociedad americana, ha sido una “guerra olvidada” a lo largo de la segunda mitad del siglo pasado. A diferencia de la mayoría de las guerras que tuvieron lugar en el siglo XX, la Guerra de Corea apenas ha sido mencionada en la literatura americana. Entonces, a través de Useless Servants de Ronaldo Hinojosa y A long way from Home de Gordon Kahn, este estudio tiene como objetivo realizar un acercamiento a los significados encubiertos de la participación de los latinos en la Guerra de Corea y al sentido histórico de la Guerra de Corea en la formación y el desarrollo del Movimiento Chicano en los 1960. En general, la Guerra de Corea se ha entendido, por una parte, como un aparato para consolidar el patriotismo americano y, por otra, para extraer una visión crítica sobre la participación de los latinos en la acción militar. Es de señalar, entonces, que ambas obras van más allá de la comprensión tradicional de la Guerra de Corea en las que ésta sirve como un punto de transición de la conciencia que tenían los latinos sobre la nación estadounidense. Es decir, muestran la formacion de la conciencia critica de los latinos que implica la resistencia a la ideologia dominante en la sociedad estadounidense.
