In 1990, part of Minamata Bay in Kyushu, Japan, was transformed into a landfill by the pollution control public works of Kumamoto Prefecture because it had been polluted with organic mercury from the Chisso Corporation factory. Individual members of Hongan-no-kai, a club founded in 1995 by a disparate group of people affected by the pollution, have since been carving from stone various sculptures such as Jizo statues in the traditional form of the Buddha, and modified Jizo, to represent, among other things, their feelings and self-image. They have also created another type of statue that reflects the memories of their childhood self-images. They have set up these statues to be displayed on the landfill site as mementos of the tragedy and the hurt that remains in spite of governmental acknowledgement and compensation provided for the severe mercury poisoning (known as Minamata disease) they suffered. They have cumulatively erected 52 stone statues over nineteen years. In this paper I analyze the interactions between members of Hongan-no-kai and the stone statues they created from a diachronic perspective to facilitate a discussion of how the material properties of these sculptures, such as their durability, and their temporality, affect the ways in which Hongan-no-kai members remember the physical and sensual landscape of Minamata. Since the late 1990s, it has been pointed out mainly by archaeologists that anthropological studies of material culture tend to overlook the “materiality”. Generally speaking, they have been concerned with the kinds of material agency and property that cannot be reduced to a proxy or extension of human intention. However, this concern should never be confused with an attempt to reduce artifacts to mere physical processes. Rather, we need a methodology to capture their way of being, which cannot be achieved by such a reduction. Thus, artifacts must not be regarded as mere objectified forms. Therefore, in this paper, based on the evidence of fieldwork data collected over 27 months between 2006 and 2013, I focus on the changes, both in the landscape of the landfill area containing the sculptures, and in their creator’s practice of narrating memories. This study found the following: (a) the durability of the statues elicit and channel a particular narrative, which is temporal in nature; (b) the transformation of sculptures through the process of weathering opens up possibilities for images associated with them to change; (c) the statues, by interacting with the surrounding landscape, evoke experiences of both the past and future. These findings suggest that more than reflecting or representing each member’s reality, the material properties of these statues have helped their creators, the members of Hongan-no-kai, to reconstruct their realities, uniting the past, the present, and the future.
