This study is an autobiographical description of the researcher's experience of participating as a learning facilitator in an in-service training for the capacity development of curriculum coordinators and civil servants in the field of vocational and technical education & training in Ethiopia. The purpose of the study is to describe and reflect on how the researcher navigated unfamiliar situations, what he did, what he felt, and what he learned from his experience as a learning facilitator in the in-service training.
Learning facilitation in local training for international development & cooperation involved identifying the actual needs of participants planning and organizing the training to increase participation facilitating learning activities and ensuring that participants were learning meaningfully from the training. In order to make the local training for international development & cooperation participant-centered it was particularly important to operate the local training committee, analyze KOICA reference materials, conduct needs analysis, manage the training environment and course operating conditions, orientation, team building, and share evaluation results.
From a personal perspective, the researcher engaged in a kind of 'reflective practice' of moving forward one step at a time, like carefully crossing a slippery slope, searching for the best way forward in a fluid and uncertain situation. He started with nervousness and fear in the context of an unfamiliar culture and system, but gradually gained confidence and calmness in communication, and felt courage and efficacy. An important trigger for this dynamic transition was the “review and reflection” activity and the sharing of the results.
