In 2023, Hyundai Motor collaborated with Giorgetto Giugiaro to restore the “Pony Coupe Concept,” a concept car that was unveiled alongside the Pony at the 1974 Torino Motor Show in Italy. Giorgetto Giugiaro is the designer of the original Pony. Reflecting on the project, a Hyundai Motor official stated, “The concept of Pony and Pony Coupe, the first unique models, is a significant intellectual and practical legacy for Hyundai Motor as we confront new challenges in the era of electric vehicles and mobility”(Hyundai Motor, 2022). Likewise, Pony has delivered a distinctive achievement to Hyundai Motors and left a cultural legacy. Drawing inspiration from the “Pony Coupe Concept” in 2022, Hyundai Motors unveiled the “N Vision 74,” a Hydrogen Rolling Lab. Since 2021, Hyundai Motors has been launching its “Ioniq” series, which features a reinterpreted design based on the Pony.
As an illustration of how “Event creates time,”(John Berger, 2019) Pony’s cultural heritage transcends the past and resonates as a contemporary design even after 50 years. Pony is not just a corporate heritage but also the first domestically designed model that achieved successful exportation, leaving a lasting impression on the memories of the Korean people. Furthermore, it gave rise to various car cultures that continue to captivate modern aesthetics to this day. The impacts should be felt not only by producers on the production side but also by consumers on the demand side. However, in the past, research efforts primarily focused on the development and production aspects of Pony. The cultural significance of Pony was often overlooked and insufficiently analyzed. Therefore, in order to shed new light on this iconic vehicle, this paper aims to reexamine Pony’s cultural impact in a more comprehensive manner, even 50 years after its initial launch.
With a specific focus on Hyundai Motor’s Pony, this study endeavors to unveil the car culture prevalent in Korea during the 1980s. While previous studies have primarily focused on defining and analyzing the impact on the production side, this paper aims to explore how the public perceives, comprehends, and engages with automobile design. Extensive use has been made of newspaper articles, research reports, national records, and literary works pertaining to automobiles, including Pony, in order to provide a comprehensive analysis.
The study comprehensively examines the emergence of Pony, considering various contextual factors such as policy, supply and demand, infrastructure, and the overall environment. Pony’s development was not solely a result of policy or corporate influence, but rather a response to the increasing earnings of the population and the evolving infrastructure for automobiles. The study aims to shed light on the specific demands that led to the emergence of Pony. To provide a comprehensive understanding of Pony, the study delves into its production process, design, and sales. Additionally, the study explores the distinct characteristics of Pony, both in terms of its development and design process. Moreover, the research observes the lasting impact and achievements that Pony made following its initial introduction.
Building upon this background, the study elucidates certain distinctive elements of Korean car culture.
First of all, the notion of a “national car” emerged, initially referring to an economically affordable vehicle. However, over time, the connotation changed. “National car” used to mean a car made by a Korean company, but today it has become the best-selling car. In the context of the changing meaning of “national car,” The Pony was Korea’s best-selling car and a symbol representing excellence and success in the automotive industry.
Secondly, Pony played a pivotal role in establishing Korea as a notable car-exporting nation. Following its initial successful export in 1976, the number of cars increased gradually in terms of both volume and geographical reach. The 1970s marked a crucial period of economic recovery and export for Korea, which became an economic ideology permeating into the everyday lives of its people. Therefore, the successful exportation of Pony not only served as a promotional tool for the car itself but also bolstered the morale of the people during a period of remarkable economic growth.
Thirdly, the notion of “my car” emerged during the production of Pony. As the number of car owners increased, Pony’s advertisements and extensive media exposure signaled the dawn of the “my car” era. This heightened people’s interest and intensified their desire for car ownership.
Fourthly, the 1970s witnessed the expansion of leisure culture, coinciding with the construction of express motorways. This era also marked the emergence of a leisure and vacation culture, which was relatively new to Korea. Pony’s advertisements depicted families embarking on trips, showcasing how the car revolutionized vacation culture.
Lastly, there was a mix of car preferences. People who were not accustomed to passenger cars did not have clear criteria for choosing a personal vehicle. The somewhat scattered appeals in Pony advertisements between 1975 and 1985 were a result of this.
Hyundai Motor’s Pony emerged during a crucial period when Korea’s distinct automobile culture was taking shape. It demonstrated the car’s significant contribution to the formation of this unique car culture in Korea. This study explores diverse facets of Pony’s emergence and the prevalent car culture during its production era. The five characteristics I previously discussed exhibited prominent features within specific time periods, influenced by their respective backgrounds. Some characteristics have evolved gradually, while others persistently manifest their defining traits. These findings lead to the conclusion that cars serve as a reflection of contemporary society and act as intermediaries that shape societal culture, ultimately becoming design products that contribute to cultural development.
