Kim Yu-jeong described the painful lives of people in general during the Japanese occupation in a realistic and quite manner. His characters were stupid and innocent, who didn't even know that the contradictory social structure under the Japanese occupation made their poverty worse.
The purpose of this study was to delve into female characters in Kim Yu-jeong's novels by categorizing them and discussing each type's characteristics. And it's also attempted to examine his novels included in textbooks to find out what types of female characters were presented to learners. The findings of the study were as follows:
First, the female characters in Kim Yu-jeong's novels were largely classified into three types: obedient, selfish and positive types.
As for the obedient image of woman, typical Korean mothers belonged to this category, who led a painful and patient life. The female characters of this type were strong and responsible for livelihood on behalf of male characters who were incompetent and indecent in the poverty-stricken colonial period.
The egocentric type of woman referred to those who made others sacrifice for the sake of their own interest or who did harm to others without any specific reason. Those female characters were shrewd and thought of themselves only.
The positive type of woman was more active and energetic than the other types. Jeomsun could be viewed as a typical example. She was naive and ignorant and candidly unveiled her affection for a man who didn't care about her. She was outgoing, extrovert and had independent men in control. She was the heroin of Camellia, one of Kim Yu-jeong's novels that was introduced in most textbooks. The author represented conflicts about affection and social status through that character who appeared in two novels, Bombom and Camellia. She was positive, healthy and responded actively to reality.
After looking into the several types of female characters in Kim Yu-jeong's novels, the following conclusion was reached in relation to the characteristics and meaning of the female characters:
First, contrary to conventional customs, gender roles were reversed. The male characters failed to cope with reality and just wanted to escape, dreaming a vain dream. But the female characters devoted themselves to their families, though they were abused by their husbands, and they lived an active life.
Second, the patriarchal system made the female characters severely and extraordinarily depreciated. They were more competent than the male characters, and took the lead in household economy. Nonetheless, their personality was disregarded. They were driven and behaved in an active way, but they didn't think in an independent manner. In other words, they were able to respond well to reality because of their husbands. Even though their husbands were dependent upon them economically, they didn't treat them properly on the ground of patriarchy. That could be called one of the unique characteristics of Kim Yu-jeong's novels.
Third, the female characters were not that decent, because they had to earn their livelihood. They were more affected by reality, in which they had to practice prostitution, than by morality that prohibited it.
Fourth, the author graphically visualized the tragic reality of the low class including farmers in the 1930s by portraying women who suffered due to the exploitation of Japan and feudal system called patriarchy. His description of the low class represented the contradiction of the Japanese rule in the 1930s. The female characters were actually householders who had to be responsible for family economy without having any particular job. At the same time, however, they were oppressed and neglected by the male characters, and they couldn't defy though their sex was commercialized. The female characters in Kim Yu-jeong's novels strived to gain their livelihood and protect their families even though they had to practice prostitution. The author portrayed them in an disinterested manner. The characters who weren't aware of historical situations were described sometimes realistically and sometimes humorously.
The effort by this study to look into the female characters of Kim Yu-jeong's novels introduced in textbooks suggested that novel education should be more than merely taking a look at interpersonal conflicts among different characters or how to get rid of the conflicts. It's needed to have a profound understanding of characters, including their dialog, personality and behavior.
