The purpose of this study is to examine the embroidered Buddhist images (subul) produced in Goryeo (918-1392) during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, particularly the small items that were created for various services related to worship of the Buddha and whose popularity was indebted to the development of the art of embroidery during the Goryeo period. The study’s goal of restoring the details of the embroidered Buddhist images of Goryeo can only be achieved by relying largely on textual records of the period and surviving examples kept in neighboring countries. The embroidered Buddhist images of Goryeo of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries are characterized by their small size, “fullcover embroidery” (mansu), i.e. works in which both the images and their background are covered by embroidery stitches, and decoration with metal ornaments.
According to Choe Ja, the widespread practice of Buddhist rites by individual worshippers across Goryeo in the mid-to-late thirteenth century resulted in the production of embroidered Buddhist images under the commission of individual Buddhists surpassing that commissioned by the royal family, and led to the popularity of smaller items. The second characteristic aspect of Goryeo’s embroidered Buddhist images was the tradition of bestowing fully embroidered kasaya (mansu gasa) on those whom one wished to honor. This tradition among the royal family of Goryeo persisted together with the tendency to produce various artworks inscribed with the character, Man (滿), which means “fullness”. The tradition of using fully embroidered Buddhist images remained prevalent across northeast Asia in the medieval period, leading one to conclude that Goryeo was not an exception to this trend. Examples show that the tradition continued into the subsequent Joseon period. The third characteristic aspect of the embroidered Buddhist images of Goryeo was the development of the kingdom’s own book binding and scroll mounting tradition, which in turn probably influenced the development of the decoration of embroidered Buddhist images in Japan. One can gain clues and insights into the practice of embroidering Buddhist images in Goryeo in contemporary paintings produced in neighboring countries and in the popularity narrative such as Su Jin(蘇晋)’s story among Goryeo’s intellectuals.
One could argue that the embroidered Buddhist images produced in Goryeo in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries - which featured vivid depictions of the Buddha and bodhisattvas marked by “an elaborate contrast of colors” and “the gradation of colors” (ungan) created by the use of the “satin stitch” (pyeongsu), the “long and short stitch” (jaryeonsu), and the “Brocade embroidery”(geummunsu) - reflected the taste of the ruling class of Goryeo at that time. This suggests that the embroidered Buddhist images of Goryeo were - together with Buddhist paintings - one of the two most significant types of religious objects of Goryeo Buddhism, and they have long been eagerly sought after by art lovers and collectors.
The tradition of making and worshipping embroidered Buddhist images in Goryeo was transmitted to the following Joseon dynasty, and it continued to prosper even among the Confucian literati elite who ideologically abhorred and oppressed Buddhism, thus highlighting the prestige that Buddhism enjoyed as a religion among the people and the potential energy of its various ritual implements, including embroidered Buddhist images, as objects of worship.
