As our speed of aging population is increasing very rapidly in comparison with others, our country is expected to face various social problems brought up by aging population. However, since negative perception on the facility welfare as well as evasion of facilities has been recently prevailing throughout the society, and up to now the studies on the welfare facilities for the aged have stressed over the administrative operation of the facility itself and protection of the aged rather than improvement of life quality of the old-age residents, so there has been much of insufficiency for enlightening welfare demand of the old-age residents in the facilities and, to satisfy such demand, developing qualitative service programs.
So this study is intended to show the correlation between the extent of service use and satisfaction of the old-age residents from the aged persons who live in Buddhist facilities among the free facilities for the aged. This is for suggesting a way to improve the quality of service in the free facilities for the aged.
For this study, from October 10 to October 23, 2008, a survey was conducted with one-to-one talk over the aged more than sixties who live in the free facilities for the aged at UlsanandsouthGyeongsangProvince. The responses from the total 196 persons were used for final analysis, and the program SPSSWIN 12.0 was used for statistical treatment. The result of this study is as follows:
First, among the old-age residents, the number of old women was 3 times more than that of old men, and the major portion of the age was 'elder than eighties'. This can be interpreted that the aging of the old-age residents has been progressing. Among the old-age residents, the aged with religion was 66.3% and the Buddhism had highest number. The highest response as the motive to enter the facility was 'unavailability of person to take care of them', and more than half of them entered the facility voluntarily. The biggest concern for entering the facility was 'maladjustment to a group setting, followed by 'the probable absence of freedom of individual life' and 'saving face of their sons and daughters'. This result indicates that the view from outside on the facility is still negative and the facility itself is deemed to be rather reclusive.
Second, as for the use of the service, the result showed that the service for daily life out of all the services of the facility was the most used, and the service for leisure activity was the least used. And the extent of use for traditional medical clinic and rehab treatment was the lowest among the health and medical services.
Third, as for the extent of satisfaction on the service, satisfaction on the service related to daily life showed the highest among overall services of the facility, and satisfaction on the service for leisure activity showed the least. This result indicates that the service to be used more shows more satisfaction too.
Fourth, the survey showed that the extent of use and satisfaction of the overall services of the facility was affected by the individual characteristics, motive of entrance and its process characteristics, and the extent of satisfaction on service operation was affected only by motive of entrance and its process characteristics. The more the use of the service for leisure activity and the service for daily life increased, the more the extent of satisfaction on the services related to daily life showed; and the more the use of the service for the health and medical service and leisure activity, the more the extent of satisfaction on the health and medical service increased. The more the use of leisure activity service and emotional support service and the less the use of the health and medical service, the more the extent of satisfaction on the leisure activity service showed.
Through the result of this study, following answers to improve the extent of service use and satisfaction on the old-age residents in the free facilities for the aged; First, a internal support for leisure activity service individualized according to the demand of each old-age residents in the facility is necessary. Second, professional support for leisure activity service and medical service in connection with local communities is required. Third, the quality of service should be improved through the education of the staffs who are the actual providers of the services.
