Sarah Siddons as the Tragic Muse>(1784)는 18세기 말 영국에서 유행했던 연극 초상화를 대표하는 작품이다.
Sir Joshua Reynolds’ (1723~1792) Sarah Siddons as the Tragic Muse(1784), currently held in the art collection of the Huntington Library in the United States, is a leading example of the theatrical portrait genre that enjoyed popularity in late 18th century England. Like many theatrical portraits of its time, the Tragic Muse was born primarily of a popular zeal for worshipping actresses. Unlike the general form of theatrical portraits of the time, however, the Tragic Muse is characterized by its exceptional lack of a dramatic narrative. This thesis attempts to consider the meaning of iconological changes in the Tragic Muse, and the notions of “tragedy” and “tragic muse” manifested in Siddons' posture, in the context of Reynolds’ theory of art and of 18th century theories of tragedy.
Until now, study of the Tragic Muse has had a pronounced and uniform tendency to understand the work through the frame of Reynold’s stylistic history. Recently, many scholars have explained the social and cultural-historical meaning of the work with recourse to suggestive terms such as “celebrity culture” and “the 18th century theatrical environment.” Nonetheless, the fact is that it is hard to find a specific discussion of the meaning of, or reasons for, such terms. Consequently, in order to break through such interpretative difficulties, this thesis begins with an examination of the iconographical origins of the work, centered on Reynolds’ Discourses on Art. It then attempts to interpret the work’s formal characteristics in terms of their relationship to the tragic muse tradition of the time, and to Aristotle’s theory of tragedy. As a result, it is able to deduce that Reynolds’ reproduction of the tragic muse reflects a new, 18th century notion of the muse and its social implications.
In fact, Reynolds’ Tragic Muse, which enabled Sarah Siddons to become firmly established as the greatest tragedy actress of the 18th century, began with his intention, as President of the Royal Academy of Arts, to prove his artistic theory of “theatrical portraits.” In his Discourses on Art, Reynolds attempts to elevate the status of the portrait, which had been regarded as a relatively low genre, by advocating a “grand manner style” of portrait that sublated the “specific nature” of the model and pursued a “universal idea.” By capturing and expressing the conceptual character of a tragic muse, rather than giving a detailed depiction of Siddons’ gestures or drawing attention to the features of an actual stage in a theatre, in accordance with his own theory, Reynolds succeeded in drawing positive reviews of his work at the time. To this end, he began by negotiating between his own unique, original method that borrowed formally from the works of master painters, and traditional tragic muse iconography, exemplified by the classical muse statues of antiquity and the work of Ripa. He also inserted contemporary theatrical elements in order to effectively convey this conceptual character. Dramatic devices such as the representation of the tragic muse sitting on a pedestal or the two personifications in the dark background, as well as several detailed expressions including the clothes and hairstyle of the tragic muse, reflect the actual theatrical environment at the time of the painting. Reynolds’ “grand style” of portrait, which thus struck a fitting harmony between existing traditions of reproducing the tragic muse, his own particular formal borrowings, and the 18th century theatrical context, itself became a new standard for reproduction of the tragic muse in the latter half of the 18th century.
This was Reynold’s method of formal expression in the Tragic Muse. For the actual theme of the tragic muse itself, too, he attempted to visualize the essence of tragedy according to Aristotle, rather than following contemporary traditions of tragic muse reproduction, which were frequently related to “Melancholy.”...
