Commemorating the 500th anniversary of Reform Movement, the Roman Catholic and the Protestant Churches recognize the need for a common principle of faith to susta in the ecumenical movement. Since the 2nd Vatican Council, Catholic Church has pursued to reestablish One Church of Unity instituted by Christ through cooperation with Orthodox and Protestant Churches, which include but not limited to joint projects for common good, spiritual unity, and theological dialogue as well. Meanwhile, Protestant Church has also been committed to the ecumenical movement of ‘Missio Dei’, as apart of evangelization of society, in order to the unity within and with Catholic Church.
‘One Holy Spirit’ is a fundamental principle of ecumenical movement.
Christians have been experienced religious conversions through personal encounter with Jesus Christ, expressing their sensus toward God in their faith with the guidance of Holy Spirit. The sensus toward transcendence, which is granted to the faithful as an instinct, is realized through ‘Holy Spirit of Truth’ and has been sustained with ‘Sensus Fidei.’ Sensus Fidei refers to “an instinct of faith or a nature of Gospel, which guides the faithful to recognize the right Christian doctrine and actions while avoid and exclude the wrong.” It is an inherent principle of Church’s unity, with which the faithful can overcome an exclusive perspective ridden with misunderstanding and prejudice and can affirm connaturality of Christians.
As ‘Sensus Fidei’ (a prophetic gift to discern, cherish, and pronounce Truth) is a connaturality of Christians, it can be said that it is a ‘common sense’ which can help the faithful to confess the truth of Gospel together; and a ‘principle of ecclesiology of communion’ which can help the faithful to reach consensus through communion and communication regardless of differences in denominations. For the ecumenical movement and the theological dialogue for the Church’s unity, the following principles are required to discover the said common sense of Sensus Fidei.
First, ‘Unity in Diversity.’ From the perspective of ‘ecclesiology of communion’ founded on pneumatology, ‘diversity’ expresses various stratums of Christians belonging to People of God, and organically links them with one Church, ‘Body of Christ.’ Diversity regards differences not as impairment of unity, but as richness of Christian traditions and faith. It is therefore a principle of ‘mutual learning’, or a principle of ‘mutual complementarity’, which nurtures and develops exchanges and communications among Christians.
As a principle of ‘Unity in Diversity’ discloses ‘hierarchy’ of all truths, different interpretations can be respected to reach a common understanding and agreement. According to a principle of ‘Hierarchy of Truths’, the hierarchy of truths is determined not by usefulness but by ‘value of salvation.’ In this regard, it also serves as a complementarity principle for more complete understanding of faith. However, it is important to note that truths(doctrines) located in the lower part of the hierarchy shall not be interpreted as secondary or invalid compared to basic truths of the top part, as they serve a crucial role in understanding the basic truths.
Second, ‘Harmonious Diversity.’ According to the principle of ‘harmonious diversity’, differences in understanding faith among various denominations can interpreted as contexts to understand the faith of others as a whole picture.
This principle helps the ecumenical theology (through hermeneutical theology) to accept differences, serving as a principle of complementarity as well. Given that consensus is made on the fundamental truth of Christian faith, different interpretations of faith and religious traditions among various denominations can be recognized and retained as fullness of One Church. Such harmonious diversity can lead to ‘Differentiated Consensus.’ This can be observed in ‘Joint Declarat
