Shakespeare in Love drew the attention of the world when it was considered for 13 Oscar prizes. Why did this film fascinate the world so much? The answer will be that, it is because the audience can taste the jouissance of imagination. First, this essay puts forward the view that Shakespeare in Love is a cultural product aimed at seducing consumers. The script was written by a top playwright, Tom Stoppard and is based on Madden`s plot. It is a romantic movie, which is full of humor and hilarious comic situations. The megastars that appear on the screen keep the audiences happy. It features Shakespeare who is writing Romeo and Juliet and it so happens that he is in love at the same time, with Viola. They seem to live out the plot of the famous play as it is being written. Also, the skillful cinematography by the foremost specialists rebuild the Elizabethan world as real in our imaginations with gorgeous costumes, vivid streets scenes and authentic characters in every corner. We do indeed revisit the past via the historical genre. When we revisit history in the film, we can see a lot of historical figures as well as the historical facts about the theater. New Historicist criticism of Shakespeare sees the play text within the social and political reality of the age, the theater as its institution, and the literature as its practice. Shakespeare in Love can be the most useful practice for a New Historist theory. Shakespeare`s Romeo and Juliet takes its place between art and life in this film. The parody on the Elizabethan women`s social position as well as the pompous aristocrats is the part of amusement we get in this film. The camera eye does not follow the historical past; it distorts and ridicules the past wrongs to the present audiences` eyes. As a result Shakespeare in Love presents with hilarity and joy a revisiting of the past and history in the imagination of the viwer.
