As the spread of smartphones became more active in the 2010s, the paradigm of video content production and consumption underwent rapid changes. The era of monopoly in which video content produced by the three terrestrial broadcasters, including KBS, MBC, and SBS, accounted for the majority of video consumed by the public, is over. With the advent of the digital transformation era, anyone can produce video content and deliver it to the public through new media, regardless of capital and technology. In the new media market where infinite video content can be produced and consumed, how have the job satisfaction and the quality of life of video content freelancers, who will be relatively sensitive to market changes in job and income stability, changed compared to the regular employees of broadcasting companies?
This study subdivides job satisfaction components into income, working hours, stress, job stability, social status, and job autonomy to determine how the digital transformation era has affected the job satisfaction and quality of life of video content freelancers. To this end, in-depth interviews were conducted with freelance producers, writers, and cameramen with approximately 10 years of experience both before and after the popularization of new media in the early 2010s.
As a result of the study, all video content freelancers who participated in in-depth interviews responded that their work stress increased or remained unchanged as new media became widespread in the era of digital transformation. There were no respondents who said their stress had decreased. Regarding changes in income, there were more respondents who said it increased than those who said it decreased. In particular, in the PD group, all who responded that there had been a change responded that their income had increased, showing a clear difference from the writer and cameraman groups, where opinions on increase/decrease were mixed. In addition, there were significant differences in responses to changes in income by generation. Most of the middle-age group responded that their income had increased, but many of the high-age group responded that their income had decreased. Additionally, many respondents said that their working hours have been reduced and job stability has also decreased since the era of digital transformation. Their social status was also perceived to have declined.
In this situation, where factors for increasing and decreasing job satisfaction were mixed, the majority of respondents said that the change in job satisfaction had increased when comprehensively considering these factors. Among respondents who reported changes in job satisfaction, all of the middle-age group responded that their satisfaction had increased, but all of the high-age group responded that it had decreased, showing clear differences between the two groups.
This study aims to reexamine the situation of freelancers, who account for the vast majority of video content creators, in line with the trends of the digital transformation era, in a situation where past research on freelance broadcasting industry workers focused on unfair treatment and low treatment received from absolute power broadcasters. We hope that this paper will contribute to the improvement of the working environment of video content freelancers, which has long been pointed out as a social problem.
