The main purpose of this thesis is to show how to teach passive expressions in the Korean language to the Japanese learners in the more efficient way in order to present the more practical teaching model in Korean education as a foreign language.
There is much difficulty in teaching and learning the Korean passive expressions based on the assignments of the Japanese learners and the Korean materials published at home and in Japan.
First of all, it is assumed that the Japanese learners are influenced by the knowledge of Japanese passive constructions in learning the Korean language, which is not prevented and corrected properly in the teaching process. Next, there are several differences between Korean and Japanese passive constructions. It has been pointed out that the Korean passive expressions are typically formed by affixation to the stem of the transitive verbs such as passive affixes {-이/히/리/기-}. In spite of this fact, it is difficult to find out the regularity of the passive verbs from such affixations morphologically. Moreover, it is hard to set up the single grammar category because of many constraints in productivity. In other words, the Korean passives are realized in various forms either by the way of connecting {되다/받다/당하다} to the substantives or by the way of combining the auxiliary verbs {지다} or {되다} with the verbs or adjectives, etc.
On the other hand, the Japanese passives are made by connecting the passive form {-areru/rareru/sareru} to the verb stem. In this way, the Japanese passive constructions are more morphologically stable since they are realized as a single form, and more productive in that both the native words and the words from Chinese characters can be realized in the passive constructions, than the Korean passives.
As a result of these differences of the passive constructions, the Japanese learners have difficulty in learning the Korean passive expressions. This is why it is difficult to apply to the Korean language education the educational grammar for Korean language learners or the theoretical research of the Korean passives.
In this thesis, all the passive expressions in Korean are included in a single semantic category. Besides, the Korean passive expressions are defined and included in the teaching syllabus.
The following are the criteria for selecting the syllabus of the Korean passive expressions.
First, all the passive expressions that share the same form morphologcally are defined as the passives whether the passive meaning is more or less revealed by the properties of the antecedents. Second, the semantic agent can be decided specifically or potentially, and if the patient affected by action of the agent is used as a subject in the sentence, it should be treated as the passive expressions. In other words, all the cases should be regarded as the passive expressions when the agentiveness of the subject is excluded, when there is any other agent that is not a subject, or a situation caused, and when the state of the subject is changed constantly. Third, the sentence construction included in the Korean passives should be combined without being interrupted by the particles between the antecedent and the passive forms. Finally, the antecedent can either have transitivity or not. That is to say, the passive expressions that include the morphologically passive form and represent the passive meaning, are included by the passives regardless of the grammatical characteristic of the antecedent.
Thus, teaching contents should be consisted of in this way so as to make the linguistic knowledge of the Japanese learners use their mother tongue. Furthermore, teaching model should be standardized in order to present this syllabus more efficiently. Therefore, the teaching contents and models for the Korean passive expressions should be made up of according to the semantically, morphologically, syntactically characteristic of each expression.
