Anger is placed into the category of personal experience, whether it is experienced in a person's private life or in a public context through a social incident. Experiences give rise to various different perceptions, understandings, perspectives and interpretations depending on the internal and external conditions of the experiencer.
This study pertains to the process of understanding how the feelings of anger and resistance arising in a social context have been perceived and experienced internally by the researcher herself as the experiencer. On April 16th 2014, when the Sewol Ferry submerged under water, the researcher suffered extreme anger and despair, which threw her into a state of physical, mental and spiritual dissociation. The incident by itself caused a major distress but the bizarre situation of observing helplessly the live transmission of the ferry gradually sinking into the ocean together with the unrescued 304 passengers alive in it left a deep trauma in her.
The researcher found it particularly overwhelming and traumatizing to watch the government's extremely inappropriate way of handling this incident, which claimed the lives of so many innocent citizens, as well as the way it responded to the call of the family members who, having lost their children and loved ones, were crying desperately for help out of deep pain and sorrow. Not only that, it was a shock to see how some groups of people were even advocating the government which was a complete failure in this incident. These feelings touched her deep inside and amplified a sense of meaninglessness and helplessness. This has brought to the surface a series of internal questions she had had in the process of practicing counseling and meditation, and those questions became more clear to her.
'Is anger not allowed to go into for a spiritual practitioner? What should be the anger of a spiritual practitioner like?'
This study chronicles the inner transformation that the researcher underwent in the process of watching and understanding the anger and resistance arising in her mind, and how they affected her life here and now. In the process of experiencing and understanding the feelings of anger and resistance, although the method of philosophical contemplations were also used, greater contributions were made by the 'awareness of the mind (mindfulness) and observation' that the researcher had embodied over the years through the counseling practices and meditation experiences, and the understanding and insights she obtained through the process. This paper will discuss how the feelings of anger and resistance were perceived and understood internally and what kinds of transformation occurred as a result. The journals the researcher had kept during the practice of mindfulness at the Shwe Oo Min Vipassana meditation center were used as a resource and autoethnography was used as a study method.
In the process of practicing mindfulness at every moment, the researcher felt in her entire body certain powerful sensation that emanated from the fluttering wings of a small butterfly, smaller and lighter than a leaf.
Observing how this power was being perceived, the researcher noticed that resistance is the original nature of life itself, of 'being alive'. In this study, 'fluttering wings of a butterfly' symbolizes resistance and the image that emerged as she observed her anger was one of a 'black bird'. 'The Black bird flies' signifies the internal transformation process of anger. In the meditation process, when the researcher's mind was immersed in anger, the image of a black bird repeatedly emerged. This mental image was recorded as part of documenting the experiences and understandings obtained during meditation, as drawings of a black bird using crayons or a smart phone drawing application. According to the flow of the internal experience of the researcher, not only the image and feeling of the black bird changed but the meaning that the researcher attached to the black bird also changed.
Through the process of observing anger in the mind triggered by a public incident, this study led the following three conclusions: First, anger triggered in the public context. Observing the anger and resistance arising in the public context offers a conduit through which we can view and understand "the world we live in from a more complete, inclusive and comprehensive perspective"(Wilber, 2016; Wilber, 2020).
Second, anger at the personal level. The process of observing the mind allowed the author to review not only the anger triggered by public incidents but also the anger and resistance experienced in terms of the authoritarian and hierarchical atmosphere of a spiritual ashram. In addition, it allowed the author to revisit the anger she had experienced personally.
As a result, she was able to understand the anger she had personally experienced more deeply. It helped her accept her present life and lead her life as continuation of the process.
Third, anger from the perspective of spiritual practice. Knowing of here and now involves understanding the phenomenon as is accurately without denying, distorting or embellishing the past and should lead to efforts to change the conditions of one's present and future life. In this regard, Ken Wilber proposes an integrative perspective for human evolution and development, one that integrates the realization about the ultimate being and the growth as a human being living in real life(Wilber, 2016; Wilber, 2020). Since the spiritual practice is grounded in human life, an integrative perspective is needed to view the pursuit of the ultimate supreme being and the practical human aspect of life.
This study was done by using the autoethnography because this method allows for the subjectivity and uniqueness of a person's inner experience, which cannot be known to or spoken by others. Autoethnography is a study method of understanding and contemplating a person's experience in a socio-cultural context. In addition to looking into the subjective experiences, contemplation and the life process of an individual, it adds to it the dimension of social, cultural and political understanding about the self. (Jones, 2005; Lee Dong Sung 2017) The researcher, as a social being, is connected to others and exists as a member of the community she belongs to. Therefore, the experience and understanding of the researcher, even though they may be personal and internal, cannot be separated from the external world of the community she belongs to.
