Evaluation of formative principles of walled fortresses and wells in Silla Dynasty from 5th to 7th centuries
Since the technology of stacking stones is passed down from person to person, unlike tangible cultural properties, it may have deformed or disconnected with the passage of time. Silla is the country that created the origin of Korean culture, it is presumed that the stone engineers have developed into a specialized group as stone building culture took place in various fields. Nevertheless, there is no technical material in the existing records. As a result, the scale and location of the stone construction in Silla Dynasty has been preserved until now, but the results of the work at restoration and reproduction site, it appears that the external shape different from the original form shape is applied.
In this study, we analyzed the size, proportion, shape, angle, distribution of stones in order to investigate the principle of elevation formation of stone construction in the Silla Dynasty. Among the stone structure in Silla Dynasty remain, not many remain in their original form. Therefore, the study was conducted on walled fortresses and wells in which certain sizes or larger remain in original form were selected. The scope of the research was limited to Silla Dynasty from 5th to 7th centuries, when the construction period and subject were clearly identified through actual archaeological layers and excavated artifacts in the existing literature and previous studies.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, The size uniformity of stones in stone construction during the Silla Dynasty was –0.8~4.1. This means that various sizes of stones were used, from small to large stones. The distribution of large stones in stone construction during the Silla Dynasty appeared uniformly was equal regardless of height. This result was common regardless of structural classification such as walled fortresses and wells during the Silla Dynasty. It is thought that people of the Silla Dynasty did not only pursue practicality and efficiency in stone construction, but also considered design factors.
Second, the proportional deviation of stones length in stone construction of the Silla Dynasty was 0.861 to 1.515. This means that not only flat stones were used for stone construction during the Silla Dynasty, but also a mixture of long and short stones.
Third, The angle deviation of stones in stone construction of the Silla Dynasty was 4.5 to 19.6, and the average of the angles was 2. This result means that the angle of each stone in stone construction of the Silla Dynasty is tilted to the left and right.
Fourth, The average shape of stones in the Silla Dynasty was as low as 0.45, the shape deviation was shown as high as 0.16. This means that most of the stones are irregularly shaped and each stone is highly different in shape.
Fifth, stone construction during the Silla Dynasty did not show a correlation between stone size, slenderness ratio, shape, and angle of the stone. Stone construction in the Joseon Dynasty showed a positive correlation between the size of the stone and slenderness ratio, negative correlation between the size and shape of the stone. The results showed that stone construction of the Joseon Dynasty was made by artificial techniques to standardize the stone, while the stone construction of the Silla Dynasty maintained the nature of the material and show the beauty of moderation by uniting the exterior with the material.
According to the masonry classification and regulations recorded in cultural Heritage restoration, it present the size, shape, and shape classification criteria of stones. It is recommended to use large stones at the bottom and smaller stones towards the top. On the contrary, the study results of stone construction of the Silla Dynasty showed that the size, proportion, angle, shape, and distribution of large stones were distributed in various numerical values irregularly. A stone is an element of a point on an appearance, and the point can be felt its size by its position and background. If the large stone is placed between large stones in a stone structure, none of them will be recognized as pictures. However, when a small stone is placed around a large stone, it becomes the background and makes the large stone recognized as a picture. These results suggest that people of the Silla Dynasty tried to avoid having monotonous volume on the stone construction and to make the stone perceived as a single point.
The study results expect that it will be used as a reference in the reconstruction of stone structures in the Silla Dynasty.
