논문(論文) : 한국고대 교류와 갈등의 공간 -고구려,발해와 강원도- = A Space for the Mutual Interchange and Conflict among Korean Ancient People-Focused on Goguryeo, Balhae, and Gangwon-do

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 고대 강원도 지역에 살았던 고대인의 삶과 역사를 시간적으로는 濊貊이 주로 활동하던 시기, 고구려의 강원지역으로의 진출과 각축이 있던 7세기까지, 그리고 남북국시대로, 공간적으로는 영서와 영동으로 나누어 변천과 그 의미를 규명해 보고자 작성되었다. 우선 예족 집단은 독자적인 정치세력을 형성하였음에도 불구하고 강력한 통일국가로서 성장하지는 못했다. 이처럼 삼국에 비교될 만큼 뚜렷한 정치체를 갖추지 못한 세력에 대하여 『삼국사기』는 일괄적으로 말갈이라고 기록하였다. 아울러 중도문화의 범위가 광범위하게 확인되는 점, 말갈의 수장이 추장으로 기록된 점, 말갈의 定住地는 확인되지만 뚜렷한 중심지가 확인되지 않는 점, 말갈과 주변 국가 간의 전쟁 기록 이외의 외교·경제 관련 기록이 거의 보이지 않는 점 등을 고려했을 때, 말갈이라는 존재는 한반도 중부지역에 광범위하게 존재하던 정치체이지만 대체적으로 삼국 같은 국가 단계나, 기타 소국 단계에 이르지 못한 집단으로 생각된다. 이들은 주변 국가와 대립·교류하면서 주변국의 역사 속으로 스며들었다. 그들 중 일부는 낙랑의 통제 아래 예하 縣民으로 살거나 영동 지역의 소국과 관계를 맺기도 했으며, 일부는 백제의 기층문화를 이루는 백제인으로 살았다. 한편 고구려에 복속되어 그 첨병으로 활약하기도 하였다. 국경 개념이 명확하지 않고 특정 국가로의 귀속의식이 불명확했던 시기에, 이들 예맥·말갈이 거주하던 강원도는 어떤 의미에서건 열린 공간이었다고 할 수 있다. 다음으로 고구려가 강원도 지역으로 진출하는 것은 광개토왕 6년(396) 한강유역에 진출하면서부터이다. 이로부터 강원도 지역은 고대 역사의 중요한 터전이 되었다. 이는 강원도 지역이 한반도 중·동부지역에 위치하고 있어 한강의 상류지역인 북한강과 남한강 水系를 형성하고 있으며, 동해안 교통로의 중요 구간을 이루고 있기 때문이다. 북한강 수계에서 남한강 수계로 이어지는 교통로는 강원도 서남부지역으로 연결되었다. 홍성-횡성-제천을 지나 충주지방으로 통하여 죽령을 넘었을 것이다. 이러한 교통로는 5세기 중반 이후 고구려의 남진로로 활용되었을 것이며, 또한 6세기 중반 이후 신라의 북진로로 사용되었다. 마지막으로 강원도의 이러한 지정학적·전략적 중요성은 남북국시대에도 그대로 이어진다고 할 수 있다. 발해와 신라의 교류의 길인 신라도의 육상 구간은 한강 상류지역을 경유하는 서부와 동해안을 종단하는 동부의 길로 나누어지는데, 이 또한 전대의 길을 계승한 것이기 때문이다. 결국 고대의 강원도는 열린 공간이자, 교류와 각축이 이루어지던 공간이라고 할 수 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purpose of this study was to disclose the life and history of Korean ancient people, who had lived in Gangwon-do, in their changes and meaning by focusing on the era when Yemaek people appeared, till the 7th century when Goguryeo people expanded their territory to Gangwon-do and made competition there, and North South States Period in time, and on Yeongdong and Yeongseo districts in space. First of all, Ye people couldn`t form a powerful united nation although they had an independent political force. Samguk Sagi mentioned all the people who didn`t establish definite political system in comparison with Three Kingdoms as Malgal (Mohe) people. In addition, considering that the wide range of Jung-do culture was confirmed, the head of Malgal people was written as Malgal`s chief, their settlement was confirmed but related central place wasn`t found, wars between Malgal and surrounding nations were written but diplomatic and economic relations between them were not found, it was supposed that Malgal people had a political system covering the central district of the Korean peninsular, but they could not reach to a nation like Three Kingdoms or a small country. Malgal people grew in the history of surrounding nations, while they were in conflict or interchange with other nations. Some people of Malgal became Hyunmin (Hyun`s resident) under the control of Nakrang, or had a correlation with small countries in Yeongdong region, or became Baekje people who created the basic culture of Baekje. Meanwhile, some people were subjected to Goguryeo people and were in the advance guard for them. At that time, the concept of frontier was not clear and specific national belongingness was indefinite, so Gangwon-do where Yemaek and Malgal people had lived was open space in all ways. Goguryeo people had expanded their territory to Gangwon-do in the 6th year (396yr) of King Gwanggaeto`s reign when they began to expand to the Han River basin. Since then, Gangwon-do had been an important base for Korean ancient history, because this district was located in the central and eastern area of the Korean peninsular, it had water systems for the North Han River and the South Han River which were the upper region of the Han River, and it included important sections for the traffic route of eastern coast. The traffic route connected from the North Han River`s water system to the South Han River`s water system was connected with the southwestern area of Gangwon-do. Ancient people might go from Hongseong, Heoingseong, Jecheon to Jukryeong through Chungju. This traffic route might be a route for the southward expansion of Goguryeo after the mid 5th century, and a route for the northward expansion of Silla after the mid 6th century. Finally, the geopolitical and strategic importance of Gangwon-do was also maintained in North South States Period. The land section of Silla Road, which was a route for the interchanges between Balhae and Silla, was divided into western road to pass through the upper region of the Han River and eastern road to traverse the eastern cost. The land section of Silla Road took over from a previous generation. In the end, ancient Gangwon-do was open space, and it was a space for the mutual interchange and conflict.
