『별건곤』(1926~1934) 범죄서사 연구 = A Study on Crime Narratives in 『Byeolgeongon』

This paper examines the narratives dealing with crimes in 『Byeolgeongon』, the grammar of their writing, and based on that, the reproduction of Imperial Japan and Colonial Korea through the rewriting of crime narratives. 『Byeolgeongon』’s editors wanted to combine entertainment with social issues. The crime narratives worked with the system of the magazine and showed the possibility of being read in alliance with other narratives. The ‘reporter- translator-writer’ could become the subject of the gaze that examined the Western empire by capturing the cracks in it or by othering the empire with racial and gendered perspective, and by lusting after and concealing the desire for Western women within the conflict between racial groups. The ‘reporter-translator-writer’ took and rewrote the criminal discourse of Colonial Korea, which had been racialized, requesting that they be seen as historical and social truths from a nationalistic perspective. However, the inner lives of the colonized intellectuals, who recognized this limitation, were written in the unrealized crime narratives. The crime narratives of 『Byeolgeongon』 reveals the desire and frustration of the colonial intellectual men to escape from the ‘double-bind’. At this time, women were constantly being othered by supplementing the colonial intellectual male ego, which was constructed through narcissism and self-pity.
