This thesis examines 'The Theatre of Images' as a practice of visual art in the contexts of Avant-Garde art, revealing its connection with the experimental character of modern art especially in the 1960s and 1970s. And by focusing on the research of Robert Wilson's works, the purpose of this study is to analyse various symbols used in Postmodern theatre and to examine the aesthetic significances revealed through them in the category of contemporary art discourse. Robert Wilson, an experimental theatre stage director and playwright who has led the New York Avant-Garde theatre of the time, breaks out of the traditional premise of a play based on 'text' and presents an 'imaged' theatre where precise gestures, movements, shapes of objects, sound, and lighting aim to create a heightened experience for the viewer. Therefore, a study is required of Wilson as a contemporary artist in that Wilson's work begins with the ideas and sketches, not the script, and he presents a dream stage through various image symbols.
For the purposes of this, chapter II of this paper prioritizes the background research of the 1960s and 1970s, which was full of various experimental arts regardless of genre. The contexts of 'Minimalism', 'Dance' and 'Post-drama', which influenced Wilson's work, essentially shared an objection to tradition and the exploration of new things. Those Avant-Garde practices rejected the uniqueness of the artwork and the status of the artist and contributed to promoting the role of the viewer through the independence and everyday art.
The third chapter deals with the work of Robert Wilson based on the context of Avant-Garde art. Wilson's 'The Theatre of Images' creates a stage image like a collage of various theatrical elements which exist independently and are layered into various layers. Among the various elements, this paper pays attention to the use of 'Light' and 'Body', and revealed that Wilson's work expands the domain of expression of time and space infinitely and is built architecturally by combining them.
The final chapter reinforces the aesthetic significance of Robert Wilson's work by correlating the body image and sensational stage characteristics read in Wilson's work with the concepts of 'Difference and Repetition' of a French philosopher Gilles Deleuze (1925-1995). Furthermore, by identifying the connecting points of Wilson's works called 'Theatre Sensation' and the thoughts of Deleuze's sensation of time and space, it is trying to develop the 'activity of thought' of 'The Theatre of Images' with artistic significance. After all, Robert Wilson's 'The Theatre of Images' has been building its own aesthetics in the flow of art history and requires an in-depth research in various fields.
