The objective of the present study is to present a Korean specialized in the situation of watching a performance or going to a concert as well as communication required in this case. Accordingly, the aim is to enable potential Korean language learners visiting Korea to go to a K-POP concert to have more interest in learning Korean language through a textbook that meets their needs and demands. Prior to suggesting the format of such a textbook, this study analyzed the Korean textbooks currently published in three types, and conducted a survey among K-POP fans that will be the consumers of the textbook. Then, the results of the survey were analyzed to determine the need for the textbook.
In the preliminary survey for textbook development, this study analyzed the setting of space in Korean textbooks distributed in the market, chapters related to watching a performance or going to a concert, and Korean textbooks using K-POP as a material to determine that there is no Korean textbook in the type proposed by this study among the ones currently published and are out in the market. Then a survey was conducted on 64 subjects consuming K-POP culturally. The results showed that first, those who enthusiastically consume K-POP by visiting Korea are women in their 20s and 30s. This implies that it is necessary to captivate the characteristics of the main consumer base in terms of external and internal structure of the textbook and use the findings as a reference in organizing the textbook. Second, the subjects tended to visit Korea more often when they had a specific K-POP singer they prefer. Many of them had a certain favorite K-POP singer if they had spent more time culturally enjoying K-POP, and they had more experience visiting Korea when they had a certain favorite K-POP singer, according to the survey. This implied that, in terms of the changing way of enjoying the K-POP culture, the demand for the Korean textbook proposed by this study will increase. Third, the subjects faced inconveniences at concerts not in terms of difficult conversations but cases that required understanding and expression of simple Korean. This indicates that the textbook proposed in this study should consist of contents that may have a positive effect on beginners of Korean language to learn the language, instead of providing specific grammar or function in a highly specific or limited situation. Fourth, regardless of experience, a higher ratio of subjects responded that they are willing to purchase the textbook proposed in this study and learn Korean. This shows that even the subjects, who responded they do not feel the need to learn Korean or they have no intention to learn Korean, also showed interest in textbooks and learning Korean language.
In sum, unlike the demand and interest of the subjects that are expected to be potential Korean language learners, there have been no textbooks written more specifically and actively for them. Moreover, since the subjects faced most difficulty in failing to have the right communication for each situation, it is necessary to create a textbook specifically for going to a K-POP concert considering various situations that will be experienced at concerts as well as the communication skills required.
Therefore, based on the survey results, this study provided plans to develop a Korean textbook for those who learn Korean for their hobby and not for work or study in order to improve their communication skills right for each situation. The textbook was organized with elements of storytelling, laying out different cases that will be experienced at concerts in chronological order to arouse the learners’interest and facilitate their learning, and enable them to become the main characters or narrators of the story.
The present study has limitations in that it failed to present active and valid need for the textbook and a complete form of the textbook due to the survey that was conducted on a small number of subjects and the limited scope of the textbook. Moreover, this study also did not visually provide the diverse exterior forms of the textbook even though the goal is to induce the learners’ interest and subjective lead. It also failed to come up with responses of learners toward the textbook and learning method, as there was no actual teaching and learning process using the textbook. However, this study as significance as it determined that there is no specialized Korean textbook unlike the increase in consumers of the K-POP culture, discovered the difficulties of K-POP fans that are not proficient in Korean at actual concerts, and induced their interest in a specialized Korean textbook to overcome their difficulties. Moreover, the textbook combined the teaching method focusing on communication with the learning method using storytelling, which can be a new attempt as a Korean textbook.
If the limitations pointed out can be overcome by constant research and study to statistically prove the validity and learning effect of the Korean textbook proposed in this study, there will be more and more demand for learning Korean language along with the cultural development of K-POP. This is expected to promote a balanced development and contribute to accelerating the global development of the hallyu (Korean wave) culture in which consumers directly participate.
