Hatred is a “social evil” that destroys individual lives, promotes social divisions, and damages societal peace and harmony. This phenomenon stems from discrimination against differences, as opposed to acceptance of differences. Differences are unique and irreplaceable to each and every individual with their own uniqueness, individuality, and specificity. However, when a social value of superiority/inferiority is projected, these characteristics vanish and are divided into vertical structures of strength and weakness, where hatred targets the weak in society. I believe hatred in this context is not a personal emotion, but a form of distorted group thinking. As hatred mainly targets the weak by the strong in any society, I shall approach the issue from an upstream and downstream perspective, whereby upstream and downstream are metaphors for the strong and the weak in society, respectively. Hatred is an inevitable problem in an upstream society. As you will see, most mainstream philosophies, including Confucianism, move upstream, while Daoism move towards downstream. What I suggest in this article will go beyond hatred and introduce the notion of “unconditional welcoming” that stems from rivers and oceans in the context of "Dao De Jing". In Daoism, downstream achieves the coexistence of Dao through unconditional acceptance of differences and the inclusion of diversity. Characteristics of “downstream” are as following: Firstly, it contains an infinite capacity for inclusion. Secondly, it is where all participants of nature interact. Finally, it is where new vitality and cultures are created. Therefore, a downstream philosophy should be used as a cultural alternative to address the intrinsic problems, such as hatred, of a co-existential crisis.
