唐後期 長安城의 변화와 都城 = The Changes in the Urban Structure of Chang’an during the Late Tang Dynasty and its Status as an Imprerial City

This paper aims to highlight the importance of examining the Tang Chang’an from the perspective of an imperial city rather than that of a city. While not every city can be considered an imperial city, every imperial city is a city. Considering this, it is believed that the historical significance of Tang Chang’an will be more pronounced when viewed from the perspective of an imperial city. Changes within Chang’an during the late Tang period are also fundamentally tied to this character.
One notable change often mentioned regarding late Tang Chang’an is the concentra tion of officials’ residences in the eastern part of the city, particularly the East Street area.
This phenomenon emerged as the Daming Palace became the center of imperial gover nance. Additionally, the clustering of the Jinzuoyuan and the establishment of the Lib inyuan in the East Street area can similarly be attributed to the rise of the Daming Palace.
This characteristic resembles a gathering around the Daming Palace, where central officials, local officials, and foreign envoys converge. Moreover, the imperial city evokes the idea of a key space that embodies the central concentration of power from the World to the Nine Provinces, then to the Imperial City, the Royal Palace, and finally to the Monarch. If the management of the Jinzuoyuan returns to the provinces to convey the emperor’s orders, and foreign envoys return home to deliver the emperor’s gifts, it can be argued that Chang’an, even in the late Tang period, still reflects the centrifugal dissemination of power from the Monarch to the Royal Palace, to the Imperial City, to the Nine Provinces, and ultimately to the World.
The Sui-Tang Chang’an is a key site for understanding the imperial power of the Tang dynasty. Therefore, studying the imperial city, Sui-Tang Chang’an, is helpful for understanding the history of the Tang dynasty. Additionally, it will serve as an important source for examining the nature of imperial power, which is a key concept in Chinese history. Considering that the study of ancient capitals in the Korean Peninsula also uses Sui-Tang Chang’an as a comparative reference, it can also serve as a valuable source for research on ancient capitals in Korea.
