This research is an attempt to examine the experiences of migration and settlement of Indo-Fijian communities with particular reference to the role of a socio-religious organization, namely Ramayan Mandli in theformation and maintenance of Indo-Fijian communities and their ethnic identities. The substantial wave of Indo-Fijian immigrants to Australia to avoid political and economic discrimination and to ensure personal and family security has been triggered by consecutive Fiji coups led by ethnic Fijians since 1987. Indo-Fijians have taken advantage of social networks and cultural institutions already established in Fiji to preserve their community and identity. Their typical chain migration based on family and marriage as well as friends and colleagues at work strongly established before migration have been highly responsible for their settlement processes and the formation of Indo-Fijian communities. Since the increase in the number of Indo-Fijian migrants from the end of the 1980s, some regions of South-western Sydney such as Liverpool, Campbelltown, and Blacktown have become the main residential locations preferred by Indo-Fijians. With the upsurge in population of Indo-Fijians in areas like Liverpool LGA, large and small sized socio-religious gatherings and organizations such as Ramayan Mandalis have also increased. To be specific, Ramayan Mandalis that Indo-Fijians have developed and elaborated to preserve and transmit community and its culture in Fiji, have become specific devices and mechanisms for consolidation of community and cultural reproduction including a unique sense of Indo-Fijian identity. It is worth mentioning that these socio-religious gatheringsand organizations have played roles for providing educational services to next generations by having Sunday Hindi schools. Most Indo-Fijians have attested that languageand religion are the important identity markers that help their children preserve individual self-awareness and cohesion in a group.
