The purpose of this study was to survey internationally married immigrant women?fs general adaptation to life in Korea, to analyze differences in their adaptation according to their demographical characteristics, their socio?]economic background in the native country, participation in support programs run by the government and civil organizations and their social network, and ultimately to improve immigrant women?fs adaptability. For these purposes, this study interviewed 122 married immigrant women in Yeongju?]si, Andong?]si and Yecheon?]gun, Gyeongsangbuk?]do.
The results of this study are summarized as follows.
First, when the married immigrant women?fs adaptation was measured using a Likert?]type scale, the mean psychological adaptation was 3.40 and the mean socio?]cultural adaptation was 3.29, so psychological adaptation was relatively higher and the mean of overall adaptation was relatively high as 3.35. Among the sub?]factors of psychological adaptation, the immigrant women?fs sense of belonging (3.51) and self?]esteem (3.36) were relatively higher than overall adaptation (3.35) and their psychological stability (3.32) was relatively lower. Among the sub?]factors of socio?]cultural adaptation, adaptation to eating life (3.58), etiquette (3.98) and popular culture (3.40) was relatively high, but adaptation to communication (2.87), traditional way of thinking (3.31), economic life (3.05), social participation (3.12), parenting (3.14), and public service and traffic rules (3.17) was relatively low.
Second, when difference in the married immigrant women?fs adaptation according to their demographical characteristics and socio?]economic background in the native country was analyzed, the immigrant women?fs adaptation to life in Korea was higher in those who were older and those whose stay in Korea were longer. Adaptation was higher in women from Thailand according to native country, in Unification Church believers according to religion, and in those living at a town according to the place of residence. In addition, Adaptation was higher in women whose age difference from the husband was less than 10 years, and in those who had Korean citizenship according to legal status. It was also relatively higher in women who had known about Korean society well according to recognition of Korea before immigration, in those who married for a religious reason according to the motive for marriage, and in those who had many children according to the number of children. What is more, adaptation was higher in women who had a job in the native country and in those whose economic condition had been poor according to socio?]economic background in the native country.
Third, when the correlation between the married immigrant women?fs social network and their adaptation was analyzed, their adaptation was in a positive correlation with the number of persons to whom they could ask a help and their network of Koreans. That is, the immigrant women?fs adaptation was higher when they had a large number of persons to whom they could ask a help and particularly when their network of Koreans was large.
Fourth, when factors affecting the married immigrant women?fs adaptation were analyzed, there was no variable related to program participation and social network that had a statistically significant effect on the immigrant women?fs adaptation, but among the demographical characteristics set as control variables, recognition of Korea before immigration appeared to have a positive effect on the women?fs adaptation. That is, the immigrant women?fs adaptation was higher when their recognition of Korea before immigration was high.
Based on the results of this study, we suggested plans as follows to support married immigrant women?fs adaptation in the aspect of social welfare.
First, Immigrant women?fs adaptation was lowest for communication. Therefore, immigrant women?fs problem in the Korean language and communication should be solved urgently through increasing teachers and places of education in community.
Second, The fact that women with Korean citizenship showed higher adaptation than those without suggests that the government should prepare measures for immigrant women?fs acquisition of citizenship. In particular, it is considered necessary for civil servants in charge at local governments to survey problems related to immigrant women?fs legal status and to take active measures to solve problems in the process of citizenship acquisition.
Third, According to the results of this study, immigrant women?fs recognition of Korean society before immigration had a positive effect on their adaptation. This suggests that foreign women who immigrate to Korea by marriage should have prior accurate understanding of Korean society, their future spouse and his family and cultural differences. In this sense, marriage agencies used most frequently by immigrant women for their international marriage should be obliged to provide accurate information and educate Korean culture in advance.
Fourth, As pointed out by many researchers, immigrant women?fs social network plays an important role for their adaptation to new environment. What is required for married immigrant women to root stably into Korean society is not only the receptive attitude of our society but also strong support systems of family, neighbors, friends, etc. and consideration for them to acquire skills to establish and maintain relations with the members of such support systems. For this, we need to survey the current state and needs of individual immigrant women and to establish efficient and close networks through various education programs and related programs.
