Wireless ad hoc network, wherein a node uses multi-hop routing to relay each others traffic without any central coordination, represents a paradigm shift away from the rigid, long?lead planning and implementation of wired backbone, and toward a real?time plug?and?play deployment model that is up to the challenges of today?s rapidly?changing connectivity environment. They have wide applications in many situations wherever wireless communication and networking are preferred for convenience and/or low cost, such as wireless mobile ad hoc networks (MANET), mesh networks and sensor networks. As there is no predefined infrastructure available in an ad hoc network, the routing protocol at the nodes dynamically controls the network topology. So, the network performance is mostly affected by the underlying routing protocol used in the network, and therefore, the design of a routing protocol in wireless ad hoc networks is a challenging issue.
As of now, we observe a number of routing metric and protocol designs for wireless ad hoc networks. Most of the designs are based on single-rate radio networks and the hop-count is commonly used as the routing metric. Modern wireless devices, such as those that implement the popular 802.11/a/b/g/n standards, offer multiple transmission rates using different modulation and coding schemes. The use of multiple rates presents a significantly more complex challenge to ad hoc routing protocols than the traditional single rate model because there is an inherent trade-off between a high transmission rate and its effective transmission range. There have been some efforts for multirateradios using the transmission-time of a packet as the routing metric. However, neither the hop-count nor the transmission-time may be a sufficient criterion for discovering a high-throughput path in a multirate wireless ad hoc network. Hop-count based routing metrics usually select a low-rate bound path whereas the transmission-time based metrics
may select a path with a comparatively large number of hops. Thus, the commonly used hop-count and transmission-time metrics become sub-optimal in multi-rate networks.
In this work, we show that the trade-off between transmission time and effective transmission range of a data rate can also be another key criterion for finding a high-throughput path in such environments. The combined impact of hop-count and transmission-time for a specific data rate on the end-to-end delay between two nodes is considered as the efficiency of the data rate. We introduce a novel routing metric based on the efficiency of a data rate that balances the required time and covering distance by a transmission. Using the new metric, we propose an on-demand routing protocol for multirate wireless environment, dubbed MR-AODV, to discover high-throughput paths in the network. We show the effectiveness of the rate efficiency in both the route discovery and data transmission, and thereby, we control the data rate at both operations. The rate control during the route discovery phase not only helps in selecting high throughput paths but also suppresses duplicate RREQ transmissions, and thus, it is effective in minimizing the route request (RREQ) avalanche.
We use simulations to evaluate the performance of the proposed MR-AODV protocol and results reveal significant improvements in end-to-end throughput and minimization of routing overhead.
