태국 축제에서 여성의 재현과 문화 창조 = 치앙마이의 송끄란과 로이끄라통을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

태국 정부는 축제의 상품적 가치를 인식하고 전지구적으로 방문객의 유치에 주력하고 있다. 축제의 상품화는 지역 여성의 삶에도 영향을 미치고 있다. 이 연구는 치앙마이의 송끄란과 로이끄라통 축제에서 여성들이 어떻게 재현되고 있고, 정부, 지방자치단체, 방문객, 공동체의 구성원들과의 관계에서 여성들이 축제에 어떻게 참여하고 있는지 살펴보았다. 이 연구의 주요 방법은 참여관찰이다.
여성들은 ‘전통’에 기반해서 남성의 보조적인 역할을 수행했고 남성 욕망의 대상으로 재현되었다. 이러한 여성상은 태국 정부의 의도대로 가부장제에 순응하는 여성의 몸을 재생산함으로써 관광산업에 유익한 태국의 이미지를 구성했다. 또한 여성들은 특정 제례와 놀이에서 배제됨으로써 축제의 주체가 되지 못했다.
그럼에도 여성들은 물놀이에서 일탈과 해방감을 경험하고 가부장제의 성규범을 위반함으로써 전복적인 공간을 창출했다. 여성들이 축제에서 문화 창조자가 되기 위해서는, 상상력과 창조성을 자유롭게 표현할 수 있는 환경이 조성되어야 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Thai government has recognized the economic value of festivals and focused on inducing tourists. The commodification of festivals also has influence on the lives of local women. This research examined how women are represented in Thai Songkran and Roy Krathong Festival of Chiangmai and participate in events such as parades, performances, beauty festivals, plays and rituals in relation with government, local government, visitors and the members of community. The main research method is the participant-observation.
Women play the subsidiary roles on the basis of tradition and are represented as objects of men’s desire. This image of women constructs that of Thailand which is beneficial for tourism, by reproducing the women’s body to adapt themselves to patriarchy, according to intention of Thai government. In addition, women did not become main agents, by being partly excluded from religious rituals and plays.
However, women experienced liberation and deviation through playing in water and created the subversive space by resisting sexual norm of patriarchy. In order that women become creators of culture in festival, the setting that women can express the imagination and creativity freely should be established.
