The purpose of this study is to provide a deeper understanding of peace on the Korean Peninsula, which is being discussed about the DMZ. In order to deepen the understanding of the peace of the DMZ, it is necessary to first consider the meaning of peace that exists in the large and small communities of various areas along with the concept of peace between the two Koreas. Through this process, we must know that peace has four attributes: fulfilling needs, coexistence, dynamic interaction and community. In other words, it is important to understand that the four elements of peace, the dynamic interaction, the community as a place where these actions take place, the coexistence of various beings and communities, and the fulfillment of the needs of its members are the main elements of peace. For a deeper understanding of the diversity and common meanings of peace will contribute to the peace of this divided earth and the peace of the individuals and communities of the world.
In this situation, there was a limited discussion on the concept of peace, which is always present when discussing the Korean peninsula in the border region centering on the DMZ and NLL. This is because the concept of peace appears in different ways according to national interests and personal convenience, depending on the country or region, philosopher or political thinker, religion, and timing. In particular, the concept of peace is important because discussions and arguments, such as peace parks and peace zones, are formed based on the ever-changing concept of peace. It must be taken into account that the content may vary depending on the person, group, country or time or place where the term peace is needed. In this respect, this study attempted to review the DMZ concept of peace. In particular, the analysis of the contents of the “differences and commonalities” of the concept of peace suggested the direction of the research in such a way as to avoid overlapping inefficiency and eliminate controversial matters.
This study focuses on the differences and commonalities of previous studies on the peace concept of the DMZ. At the same time, the direction of discussion related to active and passive peace was presented. As a result, first, common efforts of political leaders of the two Koreas were suggested. Second, it proposed disarmament, a threat to both Koreas. Third, active participation of political groups, religious groups, and civil society groups, including ruling and opposition parties. Fourth, a joint study on the concept of peace at a level that both North and South Korea can relate to was proposed. In the end, this approach approached the concept of peace on the Korean Peninsula centered on the DMZ and the border region as a paradigm for transforming from the notion of fixed boundaries to variable thinking. This aims to combine the concept of peace in the DMZ and the border region in the long term. As a result, it is time for the various discussion directions of the two Koreas to discuss the concept of peace in light of the need for a variable and innovative approach and paradigm for the DMZ and the border region. To this end, this study focused on the secondary data-based literature research, categorized, classified and analyzed.
