Gasoline direct injection (GDI) engine has been widely used in recent years because of its advantages in terms of higher engine efficiency, lower fuel consumption, and greater power output when compared to conventional port fuel injection engine. However, there are an increased focus on developing better its component by optimizing in modern GDI engines to meet the latest stringent emission standards requirements. The fuel nozzle, which plays an important component that determine both the quantity of fuel injection and spray quality to ensure the efficiency of fuel atomization, has been developed to improve better injection performances by modeling study of the internal flow behavior, multiphase flow characteristics and injection quality during its operation. Thus, the phenomenon of cavitation during the needle transient phase and at the end of injection phase is a significant concern for GDI engine applications and needs greater attention.
In this study, the effects of injection pressure and transient analysis for n-heptane fuel on cavitation phenomenon inside the nozzle of injector with multi-hole (6-hole) under dynamic needle conditions was numerically investigated. Needle motion movements, which are generated one for the fully opened condition (50µm lift) and one for the fully closed condition (1µm lift) according to the needle lift curve, are achieved by using a moving mesh method. The volume of fluid (VOF) method with three-phase mixture (liquid, vapor, and air) model along with the shear stress transport (SST) k-ω turbulence model was used to model the multiphase physics which solve the governing equations numerically. The model is implemented in the commercial CFD tool (ANSYS-Fluent) as a basic for this investigation. Based on the validated model, the models predict sequence of the volume fraction of the different phases at the difference time for the needle motion conditions, and the phenomenon of cavitation in each nozzle hole was different and unique at the different inclination of the nozzle axis. It also includes a discussion about the effect of turbulent pressure fluctuations on cavitation development from the highest lift until it completely fully closed. This sudden change in mass flow rate of the fluid lead to the break of liquid inside the nozzle from the numerical simulations performed, which results in cavitation of the fluid with an increase in the vapor volume inside the nozzle.
