The Midwest and Southwestern region of Korean Peninsula was territory of Mahan and Baekje. These two political bodies shared their culture for a long time and were gradually consolidated into Baekje. The Mugs are one of the artifacts have been excavated from both sites of Mahan and Baekje. These Mugs' excavated patterns are different in each areas according to the Baekje's territorial expansion. For these circumstances, I would like to figure out overall patterns of Mugs being excavated in the Midwest and Southwestern region of Korean Peninsula and look through these Mugs' development process according to the gradual and complex consolidation process of Mahan and Baekje.
Mugs, this study's subject, are bowl-shaped potteries with various shaped handle attached. Attributes can be found in Mugs are handle's shape, central body's shape, pottery's size, design composition, and pottery's hardness. I categorized Mugs into 'ring-shaped', 'truncated cone-shaped', and 'animal figure decorated' according to the shape of the handle, and for subclassification, I categorized Mugs into 9 types according to attributes such as mouth's shape, slenderness of central body, hardness, and design composition.
Considering excavation context and associated artifacts, it seems certain that the Mugs are closely related with Baekje. But in the midstream area of Geum river, not only old-type Mugs but developed-type Mugs are densely distributed. Accordingly, I think the Mugs are indigenous potteries in the midstream of Geum river. Considering body's shape and attached handle, Mugs may have functioned similarly with modern cups. But as Mugs become firmer and bigger, their shape becomes diverse. Because of this, I think the functions of Mugs also became various.
Development process of Mugs can be divided into 3 phases. 'Phase I' is the time when Mugs first appear. In this phase, in the midstream area of Geum river, soft and small 'ring-shaped' Mugs appear. At the slender cylinder-shaped body, ring-shaped handle was attached. In the early times of appearance, they were small about 10cm, so they may have functioned similarly with modern cups. After that, near the midstream area of Geum river, some soft and big Mugs appear.
In the 'Phase Ⅱ', Mugs greatly develop in the midstream area of Geum river which begin to be incorporated into Baekje in earnest at this time. Not only small but big Mugs are being identified and firm Mugs are mostly produced. Slender 'ring-shaped' Mugs change gradually into short and stable form. Moreover, 'truncated cone-shaped' and 'animal figure decorated' Mugs appear. And, Mugs first appear in Jeonbuk region at this phase.
In the 'Phase Ⅲ', Mugs begin to disappear in the midstream area of Geum river. I think this is because the midstream area of Geum river was completely incorporated into Baekje. Making Stone-chamber Tombs is one of the proofs of this opinion. Instead, Mugs of this phase are being excavated in Jeonbuk region and Youngsan river basin. But excavated Mugs are few in number and most of them are variant which shows regional characteristics.
