University library has been becoming a central academic facility in campus. University library supports researches and educations through offering books and information services.
In Chungnam National University library, open acess was begun partially in 1987. Now it is used except for foreign books and a few hooks and it will be opened in the whole library. But it doesn't follow its own function because of the lack of collected materioals and abnormal use of reading rooms. So the existing library is needed to recover its own functions through rearrangment existing spaces.
The aim of this study is to renovate the existing library in Chungnam National University. The directions of library renovation are as follows. First, the library offers the spaces to use the non-printed materials-video tape, gramophone record. digital tape, compact disk, micro form etc. Second, the library offers the spaces to educate library use and to inform the materials. Finally, library offers the spaces to rest.
This study is aimed to suggest the renovation design that the Chungnam National University library recovers its own functions and roles and that it accommodate the additional functions. The directions of university library renovation produced in this study are as follows.
1) University library is the facility that supports academic research, education and activity, and it plays s role in collecting, storing and inspecting of materials. So, university library should be designed to ensure the space storing and inspecting non-printed materials. and should be divorce between printed materials and non-printed materials is needed.
2) University library designed in open acess system that is more appropriate than closed acess because university library is research center, and it should be planed to store the increasing data according to industrial development. University library makes network using computer system for exchanging information and stored data with internal and external libraries.
3) Because university library is the facility which is opposed to many user's needs. it prepares educating programs to educate users about library use and resting places.
