This study examines the process of an aestheticization in the visual representations of the Chosun (ese) made both by foreigners and Chosen filmmakers themselves in the early modern era. By analyzing the stereotypes and the responses to them, this study explores the way in which the representational competitions (i.e., contention, mimicry, compromise, and resistance) were formed within the colonial mediascape.
The colonial aesthetics that is based on the evolution theory as well as the scientific methodology employs the hierarchical prepositions of the civilized versus the savage, and visualizes the Chosun (ese) both as monstrous and as beautiful. This is related to the contradictory imagination that contains a curiosity towards an incomplete, uncivilized culture and an admiration towards an old, matured culture at the same time.
This colonial imagination presupposes the death of the colony’s culture and tries heroically to restore the disappearing, pure savage with an artificial tool of aestheticization. Anthropology and Ethnographies that founded the colonial representation system also presuppose this taxidermy (death and restoration). Nevertheless, there are variations on the visual representations of Chosun (ese) in the early modern era depending where the colonial researchers position the Chosun (ese): whether they put it in opposition to the West or in a position within the Asianist geopolitics. Also, the representations of Chosun(ese) differs from those of Taiwanese aboriginals who is far apart from Chinese influence in that Chosun is considered to have ancient similarity in common with Japan and to be declining due to its own weakness and degeneration.
When Chosun filmmakers begin to produce films of their own after a long period of passive spectatorship for the representations made by westerners and Japanese, there emerges a representational compromise with/against the aestheticization that have been validating the colonial knowledge and interests. First, Chosun filmmakers more focuses on contemporary landscapes and everyday life of workers in modernizing Chosun rather than on disappearing tradition or uncivilized aspects that were prevailed in colonial representations. This resistant representational strategy shows Chosun (ese) not as aesthetic object but as active agency. Second, Chosun filmmakers try to assimilate each frame into narrative flows, while ethnographic representations tended to validate a frame or a tableau of its object. This implies the reinterpretation strategy of the native filmmakers’ of colonial technology as a tool of ethnographic observation. Third, film criticism by Chosun intellectuals shows the sensitive reaction towards whether filmmakers should repeat the stereotypes of the colonial representations or appropriate them as one of options of visualizing self-identity. This means a formation of a reflective consciousness in the history of Chosun cinema on the reproduction and naturalization of colonized images as stereotype.
