서울 백련사의 신중신앙과 불화제작 양상 = The Belief in Guardian Deities and the Aspects of Buddhist Painting Production at Baekryeonsa Temple in Seoul

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 백련사에 봉안된 <조왕도> 두 점과 대방 <제석천도>를 중심으로, 조선 말기 신중신앙의 전개 양상과 왕실 관련 불화의 도상적 특징을 고찰한 것이다. 부뚜막 신으로 수명을 관장하는조왕신은 사명신적 성격을 지니며, 백련사 <조왕도>는 과록과 오행통 등 지물을 통해 이러한 역할을 시각화하였다. 특히 공양간 <조왕도>는 비록 화기가 없으나 방제와 경책의 기입을 통해 1899년순헌황귀비가 귀인이었던 시기에 제작된 작품임이 확인된다. 약사전에 봉안된 <조왕도>는 「축상작법절차」에 근거해, 실질적 왕비 역할을 수행한 엄귀인의 장수를 기원하기 위해 조성된 것으로 해석된다.
또한 백련사 <조왕도>를 비롯한 20세기 초 왕실 발원 조왕도에는 공통적으로 관우 도상의 영향 아래 장수형 조왕신 도상이 표현되었음이 확인된다. 한편 1907년에 제작된 백련사 대방 <제석천도>는 제석천이 왕실을 수호하는 천신으로 인식되던 전통을 반영하며, 화풍 및 도상 분석을 통해 혜고봉감의 작품으로 추정된다. 이 불화에서는 일월오봉도의 상징성이 강하게 나타나는데, 제석천과 일월천자, 두 천자가 구성하는 오존 구도와 수대의 표현, 병풍의 수목 배치 등에서 시각적유사성이 뚜렷하다. 이러한 도상의 차용은 제석천에게 대한제국 황제 고종의 안녕과 가호를 기원하고자 했던 당시 시대적 상황과 왕실의 정치적 염원을 반영한 것으로 해석된다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study examines the characteristics of royal patronage and iconography in late Joseon Buddhist paintings, focusing on two Jowangdo (Paintings of the Kitchen God) enshrined at Baekryeonsa Temple and the Jeseokdo (Painting of Indra) housed in the temple’s Daebang (Great Hall). Jowang, the deity of the hearth, functions as a Samyeong-shin (liferegulating spirit), a role that is visually represented by ritual implements such as the Gwaryok (record book of sins) and the Ohaengtong (container holding branches symbolizing the Five Elements). The Jowangdo in the offering hall, though lacking a hwagi (inscription), includes dedicatory texts that confirm it was produced in 1899, during the period when Lady Eom (later Sunheon Hwanggwibi) held the royal title of Gwiin. The Jowangdo in the Yaksa-jeon (Medicine Buddha Hall) is interpreted as having been created to pray for her longevity, based on the ritual structure of the Chuksangjakbeopjeolcha(ritual for blessing the royal family), which pairs Bhaisajyaguru with the queen.
Royally commissioned Jowangdo paintings from the early 20th century commonly depict the Kitchen God in the form of a military general. Though the reason for this visual preference remains unclear, iconographic analysis suggests influence from the image of Guan Yu, a figure widely venerated through the 19th-century Gwanseong Jegun (Holy Emperor Lord Guan) cult. In parallel, the Jeseokdo produced in 1907 at Baekryeonsa reflects the longstanding conception of Indra as a celestial protector of royal authority. Stylistic comparison indicates that this painting was created by the monk-painter Bonggam(奉鑑), who had previously worked on similar themes. Unlike earlier examples, the Baekryeonsa version emphasizes symbolic elements from the Ilwolobongdo (Sun-Moon-Five Peaks Painting), a visual motif representing royal sovereignty. The composition—featuring Indra, the Sun and Moon deities, and two additional celestial attendants—forms a five-figure structure reminiscent of the five mountain peaks, while details such as flowing sashes, ornamental motifs, and flanking trees further reinforce this association. The deliberate inclusion of Ilwolobongdo symbolism in the Jeseokdo may be understood as a visual invocation of divine protection for Emperor Gojong during the final years of the Korean Empire.
