According to the comparative study on the style of Goguryeo armor and the production technique, we could see that Goguryeo had unique characteristic and tradition distinct from its neighboring countries. It is because Goguryeo had an outstanding production technique compared to China or northern area, which was obtained by succeeding to Gojoseon that produced armors prior to China. In particular, the rectangular style of the iron sheet shown in Goguryeo armor and horse armor is exactly the same with that of Gojoseon, which was produced from the early stage until the collapse of Gojoseon. Despite the influence of China or northern area, the armor of Goguryeo succeeded to Gojoseon and was developed independently. Since the iron sheets of China were originated from Gojoseon, it had a feature of rectangular style of Gojoseon during the Warring States period of ancient China. Later when it comes to Seohan period, the same iron sheet becomes comparatively smaller rectangular or oval shape, due to the influence of Gojoseon that produced it earlier than China. China couldn’t produce iron armor in the Warring States period. The emergence of iron armor can only be assumed by the excavation of the helmet which was merely a connection of rounded rectangular iron sheets in the end of the Warring States period. The armor of Qin Dynasty was entirely made of leather that only covered the chest, back and the shoulder. In China, the iron armor comes into wide use for the time in Seohan period. Before Wu-ti, the early stage of Seohan, the military was mostly composed of the infantry units and the armor was not distributed very well. However, under Wu-ti Dynasty, the number of the cavalry wearing the armor increased dramatically due to the war against the Huns and the former large iron sheet evolves into a relatively sophisticated, fish scale-shaped style. Still, the leather armor was more widely used than the ironclad armor. This period was when Gojoseon was gradually collapsing and the change in military equipment of Wu-ti Dynasty is considered one of the factors of Gojoseon’s fall. Goguryeo kept Gojoseon’s iron armor production technique and actively produced more advanced ironclad armors. During the Three Kingdoms Yangjin period, as the cavalry became more important in military, all Chinese soldiers wore the same Yongsoo-gae and during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period, Yangdang-gae was produced. The characteristics of Yongsoo-gae or Yangdang-gae style cannot be found in the ancient tomb mural nor in the excavated relics of Goguryeo. Comparing the characteristics of Goguryeo armor that appear on the Goguryeo ancient tomb mural and the armor of China and the northern area of the same period, there is a huge gap in their level. Since Goguryeo had various armors considering the composition of the military and the positions, the shape and the size of the iron sheets were also diverse, as well as the style of the armor. Furthermore, in case of the Goguryeo horse armor, the time of its production was at least 2 centuries in advance of China and other northern area, enabling the assumption that their horse armor would have been influenced by Goguryeo. The iron helmets excavated from Shilla and Gaya territory of about fifth century AD are all rectangular shaped and the bronze buttons are ornamenting the joints of iron sheets. These bronze ornamental buttons are the characteristic of Gojoseon bronze helmets that does not exist in China or northern area. In addition, most of the helmets made up of long, rectangular iron sheets have rounded top. Japanese scholars see this round top part as a northern element and call them Mongolian helmet, thinking that Goguryeo was influenced by Mongolia. However, in case of northern area, they did not use helmets with the round top nor one that is connected by long rectangular iron sheets. This perspective is due to the prejudice of Japanese and Korean scholars who believe that the armors an
