Ⅰ. Brancusi as pursuer of abstract sculpture.
His appearance into the modern sculpture history take some uniqueness. The first of it is that he is the pursuer of the principle of conceptional simplicity in sculpture. He already tried out some elements which is shown in contemporary Kinetic art, Environmenta lart, Cybernetic art and thefore he is just the opener of abstract sculpture in art history.
Ⅱ. The Art of Brancusi
A, periodical division and the subject in works
1) His works are largely divided by the year 1907, including from early period to the year which the work 'Stanescu monument' was produced, and from that year(1907) his artistic creative character begin come to reach maturity to get mature in works. In his early period especially, his naturalist works of head are notable, and the works in late period are very contrast with his interests in subject and feeling filled in works, are related to the early works. From early to the 1907 his last works of head are 「Torment」(1907) and 「Head of a boy」(1907). In works of 「The prayer」(1907) and 「The Kiss」(1907) in late we can see his direction in art had been changod continuously.
In head stature he was interested, which he had been did in early period. And His 79 works of head and of torso amounting to 42% of his about 190 all works. They all were produced after the work The prayer, show enough his interests above.
He especially had made many children. It is because of his interests in the curiousness and vitality and simple pureness as we see from children. And he never loose such character for his all life. He found the universal and spiritual substantiality of beauty by his simplizing objects. In result of such pursuit of beauty, his head statues are gradually simplized into ovoid shapes. It is not the description of natural object, but the work formed from his image with meaning which he intended to creat from the natural cubic and plastic masterial.
Of his works ovoid shapes 「Beginning of the world」「Sleeping Muse」「Sculpture for the Blined」etc. are representative works on which reflected the emotion of his philosophical dialogue as an artist. His thoughts reflected on his ovoid shape, show that simplicity and complexity are equal in nature, namely it means just that of harmony with both.
2) In dividion of subjects, we can see that he took his subject firstly from the head of man. And next subject is animal. Of them, 27 works are bird turtle, fish etc. and others are 23 works. The most representative works of these subject are 「bird in space」「Fish」「The Turtle」, and they never be at a standstill, but are full of animal-like vitalty. Such vitality emphasize his shapes to be simplized.
3) He produced 19 architectural Works and Objects; 「King of Kings」「The Endless Column」「Prodigal son」etc. All they are made of wood, and have some different character. They are gloomy devilishness. Such fantastic sculptures remind us religious idol of Africa, especially in its premitive character.
B. From and Structure in his works,
1) His sculptures are distinguished from the other part in works. The other part is the base, and it is not a part of sculpture, but a ornament in order to emphasize the meaning of sculpture itself. The base emphasize the tensity from balanced sculpture, and the both, base and sculpture are wholley harmonized with space which they posess. His base which heeven place beneath his works, is in harmony with sculpture.
And same time it emphasizes the tensity of work more.
The base is very important to understand his works.
2) In the head statue which he made much, we can see most of the neck akr connected with the head making angle at the one side of the necks. are connected with the head making angle at the one side of the neck. His such treatment looks sharp-pointed finish. This may be the result from what he to avoid that the neck in common support the head and substitute as a ground bace.
3) Of his works in late period. [The Sorceress][Torso of a Young Man] [Turtle] etc. shows that his compound treatment of axis gradually become to be simplized. This Problem is solved perfectly in the marble [Flying Turtle]. That is the problem which for long time he had searched fir a unified and same time compound shape.
4) His Changing the shape and materals had produced many works from a subject, whenever a subject birth into works, the details are omited and shape became simple. And his thoughts on such his works, had deep and wide.
