The Vietnam War played a very important role in reshaping American history, society and culture. Hence, even after the fall of Saigon, numerous Vietnam War films have been produced in U.S., constantly reminding the American people of the trauma of the war. This paper examines First Blood, one of the most significant Vietnam War films. On the surface level, he films is about the frustration and anger Vietnam War veterans suffered from when they came back home. However, when one reads the film from the perspective of collective unconscious, one can see that it touches upon much more complex issues. Focusing on Rambo`s body as the film`s greatest spectacle, this paper interprets the birth of this spectacular body as an expression of collective desires of Americans: the desire to recover masculinity on one hand, and to compensate the loss of pride which resulted from the defeat on the other hand. As Don Ringnalda argues, Americans lost the war, in a sense, because they fought the war based on Newtonian world-view or linear way of thinking. In other words, without putting the Vietnamese specificity into account, Americans applied traditional Western War strategies to Vietnam, which proved to be little effective in the guerilla war. Therefore, even though the Vietnam War was an undefeatable war to Americans in terms of statistics, they lost the war. In addition to the defeat of the war itself, Americans lost the American masculinity and pride. On top of the ultimate masculinity his body displays, Rambo is also represented as the incarnation of a real warrior, who never initiates any harm to anyone while he is fully capable of doing so. He also fights the way Viet Cong guerrillas fought, which highlights his heroism because the fighting is not assisted by any product of technology. What is achieved by this combination of masculinity and guerilla fighting is the erasure of the traumatic memory of the war. On that basis, the spectacular hero Rambo is born to retell the war story, albeit in the form of imagination and fantasy.
