Natural ecosystem in Korea is continuously being destroyed by development projects following rapid industrialization and urbanization. As a result, there are concerns about the deterioration of ecosystem services due to the loss of the structure and function of the ecosystem. The need for restoration of the natural environment has grown accordingly, and government departments are carrying forward restoration projects. However, in the course of the natural forest restoration projects, there were many cases where mature trees, centering on landscape tree species such as exotic species and improved trees, were mainly planted while ignoring the function and structure of the forest. As a result, they were subject to intensive management such as weeding, hindering the development of vegetation and increasing maintenance costs. The natural forests
restoration projects should be a project that creates the foundation of an ecosystem through soil and vegetation recovery, but the reality is different, and there are some cases that lead to a waste of budget.
To overcome the issue, it was assumed that ‘modular community planting’ where various kinds of short trees are planted at high density, and seeds are dispersed by wild animals, would be better for restoring natural forests than the existing mature tree planting after improving the planting ground. To prove it, site surveys of related studies and field control experiments were conducted, and the effectiveness was empirically evaluated.
To this end, two sites, one constructed by multiple species planting at high density (a modular community planting site) and another constructed by mature tree planting according to existing practices (a mature tree planting site), were investigated, and the differences were evaluated in Chapter 3. Based on the results of
Chapter 3, whether the planting method of multiple species at high density (the modular community planting plot) has a better natural forest restoration effect than the existing mature tree planting method (the mature tree planting plot) was verified through a systematic field experiment (experimental site in Hwasun-gun,
Jeollanam-do) in Chapter 4. In the same experimental site, it was additionally investigated whether the growth was promoted according to the difference in planting density of the modular community planting method. In addition, it was verified whether there was a natural forest restoration effect by installing a perch and erecting a log to attract wild animals such as birds and rodents to promote seed dispersal of external plant species. And it was evaluated which method was effective for soil environment improvement and carbon storage between the modular community planting plot and the mature tree planting plot. Finally, the effect of project cost reduction between the two treatment groups was checked.
As a result of the study in Chapter 3, the height growth rate increased year by year in the order of Yeongjong-do, Ansan-si, and Seongnam-si, which are modular community planting sites, and the mature tree planting site in Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do had the lowest performance. The number of species (planting pecies+inflow species) was highest in Yeongjong-do, followed by Ansan-si and Boseong-gun, and was decreased slightly in Seongnam-si. The species diversity index also showed a similar trend. The modular
community planting site has a high possibility of creating a forest similar to natural forests as the vertical structure has developed within 10 to 20 years and the biodiversity increased with external inflow species. On the other hand, it seems difficult to form a vertical structure similar to natural forests in the mature tree
planting site with a low species diversity due to the removal of lower layers by low planting density or weeding.
As a result of the study in Chapter 4, the survival rate and growth rate in the modular community planting plot were higher than in the mature tree planting plot. The coverage of the modular community
planting plot was high, completely covering the surface before 23 months, but the coverage of the mature tree planting plot was rather low due to transplant stress. It was predicted that the seedlings of the modular community planting plot planted at high density would grow higher than those of the mature tree planting plot within 5 to 6.5 years after planting. The cause of the results is considered to be multiple species planting, seedling planting, and high planting density, and the maintenance of planting ground such as soil
improvement and mulching. In other words, the seedlings planted in the modular community planting plot had better environmental adaptability after planting than the trees in the mature tree planting plot, so the survival rate and the initial growth rate would be higher. High-density planting of mixed-species of various native species relieved the complementary environmental pressure and at the same time induced competition between individuals, leading to growth promotion. In addition, maintenance of the planting ground, such as
soil improvement and drainage improvement, is considered effective in increasing the rate of existence and growth rate of seedlings.
As a result of the experiment to promote restoration of natural forests through wildlife structure, the wildlife structure installed plot was also higher in the number of species, population, and species diversity index than those in the non-installed plot. Among inflow woody species, bird dispersal type was the most common (65% or more), and tree species were more than 60%. As perches and logs provided a resting place for wild animals such as birds, and canopy closures and soil animals increased early, they became nesting and foraging spaces, increasing the appearance of wild animals, which seemed to promote seed dispersal by wild animals. It is judged that the effect of restoring natural forests is excellent, when wild animals are induced in the restoration site, as external inflow species increase, having a positive effect on the vegetation development of natural forests.
As a result of the investigation on the effectiveness of soil environment improvement according to the restoration of natural forests, the soil hardness, bulk density, volumetric moisture content, porosity rate and saturated permeability of the modular community planting plot were more improved than the mature tree planting plot. Soil animals representing the bioactivity of the soil were higher in taxa and population in the modular community planting plot than in the mature tree planting plot, and the soil nature was also higher.
As such, it was found that the soil environment of the modular community planting plot was rapidly improved, expecting that not only the recovery of natural forests but also the early recovery of the soil ecosystem would be possible.
As a result of the investigation of the carbon reduction effectiveness of natural forests restoration, the carbon storage of Quercus acutissima was 13.9 times higher for the 3 seedling per and ㎡ 3.6 times more for the 1 seedling per in the modula ㎡ r community planting plot than the mature tree planting plot. CO₂ absorption also showed a similar trend to carbon storage. The organic carbon in the soil and the carbon storage in the organic layer were also more than twice higher in the modular community planting plot than in the mature tree planting plot. The total amount of carbon storage (trees, organic layer, soil layer) was about 2.5 3.7 times h ∼ igher in the modular community planting plot than in the mature tree planting plot. This is probably because the tree height growth was promoted by competition among individuals of multiple species planted at high density in the modular community planting plot, and carbon storage was increased due to the increase in the amount of leaves due to the increase in the amount of existing plants.
Lastly, the construction cost of the modular community planting plot (natural forest construction cost) was 2.7 times lower than the forest restoration project cost and 4.3 times lower than the park/landscape construction cost. Meanwhile, compared to the reforestation project cost, the forest construction cost was 10.0 times higher, but considering the 5- to 8-year post-reforestation management, the forest construction cost is lower. The modular community planting method has a great advantage in saving maintenance costs. with high planting density, soil improvement, and mulching due to the early growth of the canopy, and the low generation of the early-successional species of low shade tolerance.
In conclusion, the ‘modular community planting construction method for natural forests’, where various kinds of short trees are planted at high density, promoting seed dispersal by wild animals, is expected to effectively restore natural forests with high biodiversity with low cost and low management after reorganizing the planting ground. It is also judged to be an excellent method in terms of soil environment improvement and carbon storage. It is expected that it will be used as a standardized method for natural forest restoration
projects in the future.
