L. 톨스토이의 소설 『카자크인들』에 나타난 자연 = Nature in L. Tolstoy`s The Cossacks

Completely depressed by the world around themselves, numerous literary heroes in the 19th century Russian literature daringly escaped into the regions of the so-called Caucasus in order to discover their own identity. Likewise, some of Tolstoy`s protagonists take the same path, following their predecessors. The Cossacks written at the time of the writer`s philosophical and religious turning point has been observed from the perspective of both Tolstoy`s philosophical and artistic system and the description of nature. This point is discovered in the image of ‘the mountains,’ ‘landscape of the mountains, and deer and cave,’ and of the figure of Eroshka in the story. Struggled with the upper society at the time, the protagonist-romantist Olenin ran into this exotic Caucasus region; the fugitive Olenin faces the first morning and was drawn to the magnificent nature and its beauty. From this unique experiences, the hero`s consciousness changes and he is full of pleasure unlike his past doings. In short, Olenin`s entire life and identity, it seems, undergoes a total new makeshift. One of most significantly, Olenin`s self-identity takes place when he and aged Eroshka went hunting in the middle of the forest and deer cave. Isolated in the forest, the hero, Olenin recognizes that all human beings and creatures die in destiny and finally what happiness is. The oneness with the nature, the climax of this story, is forged in the figure of Eroshka, the aged hunter. Undoubtedly, the figure of Eroshka is a typical example of the oneness between people and the nature. Olenin`s settling down in the Caucasus region turns out a failure; he turns back to which he belong, the urban and civilized world. He was not successful in discovering of self-identity. In this way, the story, in which Olenin experiences the nature and the Cossacks, tells us that his conceptual understanding of the world and of specifically this exotic nature is not fused into this primitive, but natural and realistic one.
