This study is an autoethnography that describes the narrative of a researcher's struggle in graduate school life due to chronic shame and making meaning of it. Chronic shame is a concept introduced in Deyoung's book 「Understanding and Treating Chronic Shame: A Relational and Neurobiological Approach」, which deals with chronic and pre-verbal aspects of dysfunctional shame. This study was conducted under the assume that the researcher has been experienced chronic shame.
Many enroll at graduate school to study counseling. There will be various reasons for entering to there and conducting studies. For example, someone might go to graduate school to understand themselves better. Another may have aspirations to become a good counselor and heal others. The phenomenon of entering the counseling department while drawing various possibilities seems to be encouraging.
However, it seems that there are many difficulties in studying counseling and growing as a professional counselor. Among them, it see ms that there is a problem of confusion between the identity as a client and the identity as a counselor. Some go on to graduate school in the department of counseling to become Professional Counselor, but it seems to be common to see students go on to the department of counseling to heal their inner wounds. Whether consciously or unconsciously, it can lead to excessive expectations and disappointments in relationships with those who, in graduate school, such as advisors, colleagues, and seniors and juniors, which can cause difficulties in developing as counseling experts.
In this study, I would like to examine one of the cases in which this aspect is revealed, 'researchers who have experienced chronic shame'. Chronic shame, which can be seen as an aftereffect of relational trauma, can be seen as a pathology that is highly likely to experience avoidance or pain in interpersonal relationships. Nonetheless, it was seems that personal healing motives were in place for the researcher with chronic shame to major in counseling, which deals with the depth of relationships, and advance to the master's course at graduate school. And it was thought that the meaning of such a researcher's experience would be able to derive a certain academic meaning.
The summary of the results is as follows. First of all, due to chronic shame, excessive expectations and frustration for others were revealed in the master's course at the graduate school of counseling. In addition, the experience of disregulated affect was revealed due to such frustration. And it was revealed that they experienced excessive shame about their own uncontrollability and ran away physically and mentally. However, through continuous regulating experiences with the graduate school community, including the advisor, I experienced the process of being able to look at and deal with my own chronic shame.
In this way, it was possible to objectify the desire as being a client to recover in the relationship and develop an attitude to develop as a professional counselor. This researcher's recovery narrative suggests the need for a safe or regulating relationship or community for an individual to grow as a professional counselor in the graduate school of counseling. The safety includes not only the experience of being completely accepted through empathy and acceptance, but also the experience of a relationship where it is okay or less fearful to be evaluated and criticized calmly as a counseling professional. In other words, it can be seen experience as a relationship or community that can be safely frustrated and grown.
It is expected that there will be students who has been experienced the same or similar problems as the researcher in graduate school,
especially in the master's course at the graduate school of counseling, which is a first steps as professional counselor. It is hoped that the research can results describing the researcher's healing experience will be of some help to others who has been experienced these difficulties.
