Suseongdang (shrine) lies in Jukmakdong in Byeonsanbando (peninsula). The main god of
Suseongdang is Gaeyanghalmeni (the old lady of Gaeyang). Gaeyanghalmeni is the sea god who is
believed to reside in the sea cave of Jukmakdong. Jukmakdong is located in the deeply protruding
area of Byeonsanbando, which faces the sea, and Suseongdang is situated on top of the cliff. Sea
ritual relics from the Baekjae dynasty lie here. Jukmakdong sea ritual relics related to the sea ritual
remains from the 6th-century Baekjae dynasty have been excavatedat the site. Diverse relics of the
sacrifice from the Baekjae to the Joseon dynasties have also been excavated, which proves that
sacrificial rituals to the sea god had been made for over 1,000 years. Aside from Baekjae
earthenware, stoneware replicas from Okinosima, Japan and celadon porcelain from the era of the
four dynasties in southern China have also been excavated at the site, indicating that it was an
important place for maritime communication. Following the southward advance of King Jangsu of
Baekjae to Wungjin, where the capital was transferred, the exchanges with the Song dynasty became
more frequent, maritime communication became more active, and maritime safety rituals were
performed. The culture of the four dynasties in southern China, along with gwaneumsinang (the
worship of the Buddhist god of mercy), was introduced to Baekjae through the southern route, in the
southern Yellow Sea.
During this time, gwaneumsinang was rampant on Putuo Mountain in Zhoushan (archipelago) due
to the maritime safety ritualsthat were constantly performed there. Meanwhile, the Buddhist god of
mercy, transformed into Halmisin (the old lady god), evolved into a religious belief from a popular
folk belief. Halmisin, the sea god, who is believed to reside in the waters, was worshipped by
fishermen for a big catch. The people of Seungsayeoldo (archipelago) and Zhoushan most likely
performed the sun ritual to implore Halmisin to watch over the fishermen during the fishing season.
The sun ritual tradition in the fishing villages of Seungsayeoldo in Hangzhou, China were later
transmitted, via the southern Yellow Sea,to Byeonsanbando, where it settled, offered as it was to the
sea god of Jukmakdong. Hence, the divinity was called Gaeyanghalmeni. Through maritime communication from the Baekjae dynasty, the sea gods of Hangzhou, China were transmitted to
other lands, Gaeyanghalmeoni being one of them.
Gaeyanghalmeoni is a sea god who was worshipped only in Suseongdang, Jukmakdong. Why did
the belief in and worship of Gaeyanghalmeni prosper in Suseongdang, Jukmakdong? It was probably
the most appropriate god at the time of maritime communication with China. As recorded in
Seonhwabongsagoryeodogyeong (also known as Goryeodogyeong, a book by a civil minister from
the Song dynasty in China that outlines the Goryeo dynasty in words and drawings), a civil minister
who visited the Goryeo dynasty performed a ritual for maritime safety to the Buddhist god of mercy
at a Buddhist temple in Mt. Putuo, before sailing off. He anchored in the latitude marked
Byeonsanbando, which was recorded in an addendum. Gaeyanghalmeni, whose history dates back
from the Baekjae to the Goryeo dynasties and even up to the Joseon dynasty, is the dominant sea god
of the waters. The people of Jukmakdong performed the Suseongdang ritual on the 14th day of the
first month of the year.
