The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of Animal-Assisted Education(AAE) on the children's virtues and cortisol levels of young children, and the following research questions were selected according to the research purpose.
Research Question 1, What is the effect of Animal-Assisted Education(AAE) on the virtues of young children?
Research Question 2, What is the effect of Animal-Assisted Education(AAE) on cortisol levels in young children?
Research Question 3, What are the individual cases of young children in the course of Animal-Assisted Education(AAE)?
The subjects of the study were 20 children aged 5, 6 and 7 (ten in the experimental group and ten in the control group) of S daycare center, located in Seoul, and the age and gender of each group were equally allocated.
As a research tool, the researcher modified and supplemented the young children's virtues evaluation scale developed by Seon-Mi Baek (2015), and used an ELISA reader (Spectra max 190, Molecular Devices, Sunnyvale, CA) to measure cortisol levels. Besides, by recording the entire session of the Animal-Assisted Education(AAE) program, the virtues of the young children observed at each session was transferred to the observation record.
The Animal-Assisted Education(AAE) program was conducted to the experimental group once a week for ten weeks from October 18, 2019, to December 20, 2019, and two certified animal dogs (large dog Golden Retriever and small dog Maltese) and animal meditation counselors participated.
For data analysis, statistical analysis was performed using SPSS 20.0. The Mann-Whitney U test was conducted to verify the pre-homogeneity of the experimental group and the control group and to verify the post-difference between groups. Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Signed-ranks was performed to verify the pre-post differences in the group.
The results of the study are as follows.
First, the analysis of the effects of Animal-Assisted Education(AAE) on the virtues of young children brought up in Research Question 1 showed that prior homogeneity was verified, and significant differences between groups were found throughout the virtues test of post-difference. Looking at the sub-factors of virtues, there were significant differences between groups in 'consideration', 'respect', and 'responsibility', and there were no significant differences between groups in 'cooperation'. Although there were significant differences in both the experimental group and the control group throughout the virtues, this can be interpreted as the effect of the Animal-Assisted Education(AAE) given that the experimental group has a larger effect size and significant differences between groups in the post-control group. Looking at the sub-factors of virtues, the experimental group showed significant differences in both 'consideration', 'respect', 'responsibility', and 'cooperation'. In contrast, the control group showed significant differences in 'consideration', 'respect', and no significant differences in 'responsibility' and 'cooperation'.
Second, the analysis of the effects of Animal-Assisted Education(AAE) on the cortisol levels of young children raised in Research Question 2 showed that prior homogeneity was verified, and significant differences between groups were found in post-difference verification. The pre-post differences verification did not show significant differences in both the experimental group and the control group, however, given that the mean value decreased. At the same time, the control group increased, and significant differences between the groups subsequently occurred, this could be interpreted as the effect of Animal-Assisted Education(AAE).
Third, the analysis of individual cases of young children in the course of the Animal-Assisted Education(AAE) raised in Research Question 3 showed a positive response to changes in virtues and cortisol levels over time, which can be interpreted as the effect of Animal-Assisted Education(AAE).
Through the results of this study, it was verified that Animal-Assisted Education(AAE) had a positive effect on the young children's virtues and cortisol levels. Therefore, this study has significance in that it proposed primary data to promote the virtues cultivation of young children and reduce the levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, by applying and verifying an educational program mediated by a companion dog at a daycare center.
