한국교회 영성에 관한 연구 = Spirituality in the Korean Protestant Churches

This paper investigates the spirituality of the protestant churches in Korea with systematic approaches from the professional point of view. It begins with casting questions on "What is spirituality?" Karl Barth and Von Hoeffer, who belong to the generation of dialectic theology rising after the World War Ⅱ, proclaimed the practical spirituality only while putting it under taboo and turning around its theological consideration. Likewise, the Korean churches have since long been placing a taboo on spirituality without endeavoring to establish the proper understanding of the term and the entity of "spirituality" that should be made from the theological point of view. To a large extend, spirituality in the Korean churches has been regarded as the matter that is exclusively restricted to those of mysticism and charisma. And it has been practiced indiscretely by some churches, in part. It has thus led to causing a number of problems relating to spirituality, which are still remaining to be solved in the Korean churches to date. Ever since the gospel was first introduced into Korea, in particular, the Korean churches has kept its unique understanding and practice of the mingled spirituality affected by its traditional religious soil of shamanism, buddhism, and confucianism.
At this context, the Korean churches are required to establish the proper understanding of the bible-based theological spirituality which is impartial, harmonized, integrated, and well-rounded, so that it may enable the churches to become more wholesome and to allow the Christians to live renewed lives. In awareness of this call of the time, this paper intends to establish the spirituality of the Korean churches by means of structural approaches. It results in establishing the proper theological understanding of spirituality in the Korean churches that should be realized from the tripartite point of view : outward spirituality movement based on revival services ; internal spirituality movement based on a deeper understanding of charisma and mysticism. ; and spirituality of action-prayer.
First of all, the spirituality based on revivable service movement is the explosion of religious enthusiasm through worship services, sermon, and prayer. It is the passionate spiritual renewal movement to take after Jesus Christ in pursuit of a new life that can be enjoyed within the knowledge of Jesus.
Secondly, the internal spirituality that puts emphasis on charisma and mysticism plays a key role in offering touches to the internal life of the Christians.
Lastly, the spirituality through prayer is indispensable for the Christians in Korea, as they are readily reminded of prayer whenever they are told of spirituality.
Spirituality in the Korean churches has been diversified and formed as rapidly as they have expanded in terms of its external volume. It is true that such rapid and diverse external growth has given rise to its internal impediment owing to lack of harmony between them. In spite of such the negative problems mentioned above, it should also be admitted that the Korean churches have kept valuable tradition of spirituality that the Western churches have not had. In particular, the Korean churches have been blessed with the unique spirituality that may include the spirituality of revivable service movement, the spirituality with emphasis on charisma and mysticism, and the spirituality through vigil and early morning prayer services.
Korean churches are faced with the requirement that they should rediscover its valuable sound spirituality that has been cultivated over the past years, in order to establish and put in practice the spirituality that is well-rounded and integral from the theological point of view and that is quite appropriate for practicing within the contemporary church culture. By doing so, the Korean churches might be able to resume growth both in external volume as was enjoyed in the past and in internal maturity of quality as well.
At the beginning of the 21st century, the Korean churches have been concentrating a great deal on the apparent decoration of buildings and advanced facilities, and a variety of institutional programs, with no more achievement of growth in external volume as was enjoyed earlier. However, it cannot be too much to say that we should recover the spirituality as is integrated in terms of evangelicalism and theology based on the biblical point of view, while making external preparations on site of ministry. It is not facility nor institutions but the living spirituality of Jesus Christ that makes possible spiritual salvation and renewal of human beings.
Essential for the existence of churches is spirituality that is integrated, theological and well-rounded one as established in this study. However, the kingdom of God cannot be realized with the spirituality only. Rather, the spiritual providence of the gospel demonstrates itself as integral over time and history, transcending the scope of any theory or method that human beings discover and work out. The wholesome growth of the Korean churches might be feasible when the well-rounded and integrated spirituality is practicing on site of ministry after they are ready to meet requirements for the integrated preparations of such factors as institutions, facilities, missionary enthusiasm, sermon, theology, modernized church buildings. It is my sincere hope that under God's providence all these factors might be turning into reality on site of ministry in the Korean churches in harmony with theological understanding of spirituality. The spirituality in the Korean protestant churches will then be established to be wholesome, biblical, integrated and well-rounded one. Such spirituality will in turn renew lives of individuals, bring about change and growth of churches, and heal and transform the Korean society with Christ's gospel, in the long run.
