'night, Mother에 나타난 페미니즘의 주제 = Feminism in 'night, Mother

국문 초록 (Abstract)

미국의 현대연극의 중요한 흐름을 이루고 있는 페미니스트 연극에 대한 연구는 우리나라에서의 현대 미국희곡에 대한 연구가 Albee 이전의 작가에 치중하고 그 이후의 오프 브로드웨이나 1970년대 80년대 작가와 그들의 동향에 대해 소개가 부족한 것을 생각할 때 더 많은 학문적 관심이 요구되는 분야라 할 수 있다. 특히 페미니스트 문학과 연극 비평 등은 가부장제가 지배하고 있는 사회를 공격한다는 점에서 후기 구조주의나 해체주의 비평에서 말하는 정전 (canon)의 파괴와 해체와 맥락을 같이 하고 있다. 이글은 미국 페미니스트 연극에서 주로 나타내고자하는 주제와 그 기법, 그리고 그것이 현대 미국의 대표적 페미니스트 작가인 Marsha Norman의 'night, Mother에 어떻게 나타나고 있는지 살펴보는 것을 목적으로 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to explore the major feminist messages expressed in feminist theatre and the dramatic techniques and methods by which these messages are expressed, taking Marsha Norman's 'night, Mother as a representative example of feminist plays.
First, feminists contend that the patriarchy is the primary cause of the oppression of women. Feminist theatre describes how women have been the victims of patriarchal society. Second, because the oppression of women was a sexual, erotic, opprression, we see a considerable attempt to deconstruct conventional ideas of sexuality and to reconstruct a new concept of sexuality and gender. Third, feminist movements attempt to raise the consciousness of women and many feminist dramas are the product of the consciousness-raising processes of the theatre groups. Fourth, the love and bonding between women are often represented as a solution to and refuge from the hostile world governed by patriarchy.
In order to convey these messages, feminist theatre adopts unique techniques and methods. In feminist theatre, ordinary detail and texture are emphasized more than the plot. Ordinariness is the bridge that connects the dramatic world and the audience. Using ordinary detail is a strategy to draw the audience into the dramatic world and to let them share the experience with the characters.
Marsha Norman employs a double-edged tactic to convey feminist messages in 'night, Mother : first, she shows how an ordinary woman has been the victim of exploitation in patriarchal society, and second, she offers positive description of that woman who struggles to regain her dignity and self-esteem. This strategy coincides with a major stream of American feminist theatre. The props used to emphasize the ordinariness of Jessie's house, such as knitting, kitchen utensils, manicure, and clocks, are intended to draw the audience into the dramatic world and let them share the characters' agony. The point of the play is that behind this ordinariness so many problems caused by male exploitation are hidden. The methods which 'night, Mother employs are intended to invite the audience into an apparently normal setting and then let them dig up the problems they never thought existed and face them.
