AI 기반 3D 캐릭터 모델링 교육 GATe 프레임워크 모델 제안 = Proposal of the GATe Framework: an Educational Model for AI-Based 3D Character Modeling

This study examines limitations in university-level 3D character modeling education in Korea amid changes in digital content production driven by generative AI. Although generative AI increasingly intervenes in and accelerates modeling workflows, current educational practices remain centered on traditional tool-based exercises and manual production, failing to systematize production workflows, learning objectives, and assessment criteria required in AI-driven environments. As a result, educational settings exhibit learner proficiency gaps, ambiguous evaluation standards, and unsystematic use of AI tools, while empirical studies that integrate generative AI across the full modeling process, curriculum structure, and assessment design remain limited domestically. To address this gap, the study analyzes 3D modeling curricula at four-year universities and conducts focus group interviews with instructors and entry-level 3D modelers to identify differences between educational practice and industry demands. In addition, a generative AI–based 3D character modeling exercise and survey were conducted with undergraduate students to examine learning experiences, difficulties, and perceptions of AI use. Based on these findings, the study proposes an instructional model that adapts the Generative AI–based Teaching and Learning Framework (GATe) developed by KERIS to 3D character modeling education. The proposed model restructures instruction into four stages—introduction, exploration, creation, and reflection—integrating AI usage with human-led refinement, process-oriented assessment, and ethical considerations. The study provides empirical evidence that 3D character modeling education in the generative AI era should move beyond tool-centered practice toward a structured instructional framework that clarifies AI usage stages, systematizes human intervention, and embeds evaluation and ethical principles.
