The chief importance and value of the Samkuk Yusa is that it is the only extant version of the Tangun myth (檀君神話). This myth explains the origins of the Korean people and gives an account of the extablishment and chronology of the Ancient Chosun. Without it, we would be unable to discover the beginnings of the Korean people and it would be difficult to ascertain their peculiar mode of thought and consciousness.
The author of the Samkuk Yusa was the Buddhist monk Ilyon (僧一然). Though he is responsible for the book as a whole, he did not create the Tangun Myth, rather, he drew his material for it from two no longer extant documents, the Kogi (古記) and the Weishuh (魏書). On one hand some scholars have maintained that Ilyon created the myth, and on the other, that the Kogi was written in reaction against foreign invasions at they end of Unified Silla (統一新羅) and Koryo Periods, and represents a spirit of national pride and independence. Thus they have maintained, Ilyon's book, at most, is an expression of the then nascent national consciousness, and at the least, a pastime composition or amateur attempt at writing history.
Certainl that consciousness would have been one of the conditions under which he wrote the book, but it is only an external one. This paper will explore the internal reasons, the internal necessity for its composition. First, we must recall that Ilyon was a Buddhist monk and, especially as a traditional Korean monk, his goal would not just have been to lead a religious life of quiet meditation, rather, to establish those conditions necessary for the pursuit of truth. In a land disturbed by slaughter and war, it is necessary, first to prepare a $quot;Pure Land$quot; (淨土) so that the people might be saved. This sense of lave for one's country was traditional to Korean Buddhism. And extends as far back as Wonhyo (元曉) in Silla and Chinul (知訥) in Koryo and certainly in Chinul's disciple, and Il on's contemporary, Heishim (@諶). The latter, in fact, wrote a book embodying this spirit, the book of Zen proverbs celled $quot;Sunmun Yomsong$quot; (禪門拈頌). This book was written when Heishim was 49, Ilyon 21. Though there is no literature documenting a relationship between the two and we have no way of knowing whether they had any contact, we may infer, in the 84 yrs that Ilyon lived, that he would have read Heishim's book. Especially since I1yon wrote a book, the $quot;Sunmun Yomsong Sawon$quot; (禪門拈頌事苑) and the coincidence in names is too close for him not to have seen the other. Ilyon's book seems to have been an supplement to Heishim's, but we cannot be sure since neither text is extant. We may be sure that Ilyon was not unacquainted with the book and the spirit that inspired it.
In conclusion, we see that the conditions for the composition of the Samkuk Yusa ire internal as well as external, externally, the current national consciousness, internally, for a Buddhist monk, the spirit of seeking the turth as it manifested itself in service and love for one's country. It was no accident that Ilyon wrote the Samkuk Yusa. And the above mentioned conditions seem to provide sufficient reason for its compilation. In this respect any future discussion on the subject should try to achieve snore balanced understanding of Ilyon and his book, the Samkuk Yusa.
