Museums of the 21st century have become complex, multifaceted spaces with different dimensions. In order to compete with other leisure activities, museums must change and adapt to this cost-driven age. Although it is still an unfamiliar approach to classify the museum, perceived in the past as a “Cathedral of Learning”, as a space for leisure, its significance as a complex cultural space is drawing more attention. While in competition with other leisure activities there is a need for museums to attract a greater audience.
If the museum's function of collection, preservation and exhibition were emphasized in the past, then the modern day museum is changing into a complex cultural space that provides various services. By progressing into a popular form, the museum is changing its image as it aims for the participation of and service for its audience. The museum operates as the facilities and services provided for visitors are the key factors in attracting its audience. The visitor should feel warmly received and comfortable, and through this experience will continue to visit museums and can make recommendations for others to do the same.
As a media space that intends to smoothly perform its function as a complex cultural space, the museum is a convenience facility. A convenience facility is a space where museum visitors enter regardless of the type of exhibition, and it is generous in accommodating some functional activity because most visitors come into the space with a lighthearted attitude.
This study does a comparative analysis of the convenience facilities and current situation of the use of information in ten museums domestic and abroad, seeking a solution for developing museums that present the identity and cultural standard of the nation, and proposes a management plan for attracting museum visitors.
Nine types of convenience facilities taken from cases abroad that can be applied to museums of Korea are presented.
The first application is taken from the increasing number of visitors to the outdoor garden at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Breaking free from the idea that museums are dull and contained within a standardized space, the museum must be reformed to have an open space where visitors may come close to nature.
Second, the case of the Tate Galleries is noted as a museum that is a landmark. Buildings and sculptures that are landmarks are continually sought by an audience. That audience may naturally carry over as museum visitors.
Third, the British Museum, which is experience-oriented, provides the opportunity for “communication” with its audience rather than a unilateral means of conveying through the “exhibition”, making itself a museum that may be remembered for a long time.
The fourth application is taken from the case of the Louvre Museum, where the use of audio guides is an effective method of viewing. They present the shortest route to follow, reducing fatigue, and are available in each language that will accommodate visitors from different countries.
Fifth, the Musee de l'Orangerie is noted for its arrangement of large chairs inside the exhibition space. The arrangement of large chairs creates a comfortable space where visitors are able to rest while they view the art work.
Sixth, the Guggenheim Museum is noted for its unique method for viewing and use of free audio guides, which have taken into consideration the visitor's convenience and provide free explanations for modern art pieces that may be difficult to understand.
Seventh, the MoMA is noted for its utilization of modern cultural products. Through various cultural products the visitors' motivation to buy is increased, and the online shop enables them to do so at any time.
The eight application is taken from the Mori Art Museum, a complex cultural space with high accessibility. Through its connection with other convenience facilities within the Mori Tower, it naturally draws in visitors.
Finally, the new concept of The National Art Center, Tokyo is examined. Having a sophisticated restaurant and cafes makes a visit to the museum an opportunity to have a culinary experience.
Through analysis of the above eight cases from museums abroad, I have proposed six different plans for the revitalization of museums in Korea.
First, there is a need to expand the convenience facilities within the exhibition space. In order to solve problems of space limitations and fatigue, the open space and convenience facilities of the museum should be expanded, providing all museum visitors with comfort and various services.
Second is the provision of a cafeteria or restaurant with high quality food and beverage. A space for relaxation that associates the museum with a comfortable atmosphere can reduce fatigue and energize the visitors to have an enjoyable time viewing of the museum.
Third is the revitalization of the museum shop. To those visiting the museum, the museum shop is an element of attraction and has a great influence on the economic profit of the museum. After the viewing of an exhibition, the museum shop recalls the art work and further contributes to the dissemination of culture.
Fourth is the construction of a museum theme park as a landmark. A museum builds a mutual relationship with the society around it, and while promoting the development of a region's culture it provides the opportunity to lead visitors of the city into the museum.
Fifth is reinforcing the educational function and the expansion of experience-oriented space for children. Training for specialized human resources and teachers, and lectures not only for students but for the general public, will raise museum standards for improvement. Having experience-oriented exhibitions aimed at children will expand the awareness of the museum's ability to fulfill its educational role.
Sixth is the application of public relations that utilize social networking services. In following with the expanded dissemination of smart phones, this will become an aggressive marketing tool that can provide convenience for users and also attract dormant museum visitors.
As mentioned above, the expansion of convenience facilities in museums plays an important role in the age of cultural industry. Like in the cases from abroad, in order for revitalized museum management that will present the identity and cultural standards of the nation, awareness of the importance of convenience facilities and demand for aggressive management will reform the museum into a complex cultural space that is distinguished from other leisure spaces.
