The purpose of this study were to analyze cause of Myths about Abuse through University students as the research-subject between university student's experience of family violence, gender-role stereotype, and completion of related education.
In this study, university student's major, sex, religion and their parent's scholarship, occupation, income were considered. The study employed ecological perspective to the study of wife abuse as an multiple dimensional and integrated paradigm combined with isolated theories of other research.
The subjects were 408 four-year course college student's who live in Daegu area. Data were analyzed with Reliability test, descriptive method, t-test, oneway ANOVA, Scheff‘e-test using the SPSS 12.0 for windows.
First, the Myths about wife abuse of the woman and man on the university student exists 2.26 Myths score about wife abuse average1~3 grade extent point.
Second, when reviewing the relationship between socio-demographic variables and the incorrect presumption about wife abuse by college students, it was shown that there was a significantly higher statistical difference in the incorrect presumption of wife abuse by college students by sex (t=3.360). Given the fact that wife abuse is the representative type of family violence in Korea, it is imperative to consider the correction of incorrect presumption of wife abuse by male students more seriously than anything else for preventing family violence. Also, female students are required to be given information about the current family violence and plans for preventing family violence and to practice the plans actively. Also, there was no significant difference statistically in the incorrect presumption of wife abuse by major, religion, parents’ education level, and income.
Third, as a result of review in g the difference in the incorrect presumption of wife abuse by college student‘s experience of family violence, it was shown that there was no difference in the incorrect presumption of wife abuse by their experience of family violence (F=1.738). This refutes a social learning theory that those exposed to violence by witnessing family violence while growing up or who were hurt directly from family violence are likely to exercise violence to their children and spouse after growing up.
Fourth, as a result of reviewing the difference between the incorrect presumption of wife abuse by prejudice about the sex role, prejudice about the sex role was related to the incorrect presumption of wife abuse (F=5.915), and the higher was prejudice about the sex role, the higher was the incorrect presumption of wife abuse.
Fifth, as a result of reviewing the difference in the incorrect presumption of wife abuse by the completion of related education, college students who received related education showed a lower incorrect presumption about wife abuse, but there was no significant statistical difference (t=-1.554). Such results might be summarized in diverse ways; however, it also means that the related education currently offered to them falls short of expectations for reducing the incorrect presumption of wife abuse.
The following may be proposed for preventing and rooting out wife abuse based on the above research results.
First, in order to prevent wife abuse, it is necessary to seek out prevention programs taking account of the features between the sexes; and, at the same time, it is necessary to focus on plans for prevention of abuse in expectation that it will be more effective to approach prejudice about the sex role mainly by male students, and the incorrect presumption about wife abuse.
Second, it is necessary to pursue follow-up research into the causal relationship between prejudice about the sex role and the incorrect presumption of wife abuse.
Third, it is necessary to implement an objective and scientific evaluation system that may prove the effect of education on family violence, and to supplement and re-verify the research results in a way that the incorrect presumption about wife abuse may be actually improved.
