The Empress Dowager Zhangsheng, the mother of Emperor Xingzong, initiated Qingzhou White Pagoda. During the Liao Dynasty its official name was the Shakyamuni sarira stupa. An octagonal seven-story pagoda with large reliefs on every story, the most notable is the 76 Dharani pillars. The Dharani pillar first appeared on the face of the pagoda in the form of a relief and occurs most frequently. Not only that, the body of the Dharani pillar is carved with dharanis, which are the ‘Sujobulta dharani’, the ‘Genben dharani’ and the ‘Zaximyin dharani’, respectively. The three dharanis are based on the Great Dharani Sutra of Immaculate and Pure Light, translated by the monk Mitashan in the early Tang Dynasty. It is noteworthy that the body of a small stupa on the base of Tasha in this pagoda is also carved with same three dharanis. Although the forms of the small stupa and the 76 Dharani pillars are totally different, both are small stupas of Immaculate and Pure Light in a broad sense, as they are based on the Great Dharani Sutra of Immaculate and Pure Light. The total number is 77, which results from following the rules of the sutra.
Six dharanis were introduced in the Great Sutra of Immaculate and Pure Light. Among them, the Genben Dharani is the only one that has special functions such as “Praying for the Deceased” and “Protecting the country”. I argue the Empress Dowager Jangsheong initiated the Qingzhou White Pagoda to pray for blessings for the Emperor Sheongjong, for winning the battle with Xixia and for the permanence of the Liao Dynasty in the Degenerate Age of Dharma. A small stupa and 76 dharani pillars were placed on the base of Tasha and on the body of the pagoda respectively. In the scriptures, the Buddha is instructed to make 77 small stupas with clay and then place them in the pagoda. The stupa were composed of a small stupa and 76 dharani pillars, projecting onto the surface of Qingzhou White Pagoda, reflecting the popular belief of Buddha-Crown Superb Victory Dharaṇi and of the Eight Great spiritual stupas. The 77 Small Stupas of Immaculate and Pure Light on the surface of the Qingzhou White Pagoda followed the traditional formality described in the scriptures and were also combined with the special customs of the Dharani faith during the Liao Dynasty. In the end, this made for a very creative formality in which tradition and innovation were combined. Qingzhou White Pagoda is a very important work that shows the peak aspects of the Dharani faith during the Liao Dynasty. Through the Dharani pillar in the sixth year of Kaitai, it was confirmed that the imperial family already believed in the faith of the Great Dharani of Immaculate and Pure Light. This Dharani pillar was excavated from of the Chaoyang East Pagoda. This is a very significant case that indicates that there had been a significant change to the Shamanistic system in which all the dead returned to Mt. Black.
Finally, we must consider the relevance of the faith of the Immaculate and Pure Light in Korea to the Liao Dynasty. As we know, the Immaculate and Pure Light was developed based on the Great Dharani Sutra of Immaculate and Pure Light. Although the scriptures were translated in Changan during the early Tang Dynasty, and the sutra was transferred to Unified Silla Royal family immediately thereafter. The Unified Silla royal family was successful, and lasted until the middle of the Goryeo period. At present it is difficult to clearly determine if the origin of the faith of Immaculate and Pure Light lays in Korea due to the limitations in historical and real data. However, the basic contents of the faith between the two countries are consistent, and there is likely a decisive link that has not yet been revealed, as traces of the old are also found in the Qingzhou White Pagoda.
