College students are the most important time in forming human being.
College students are made while they are young. To make themselves a sound member of the society, college students must learn how to adapt themselves to the realities of the society and persue ideals in it as well as acquaint themselves with trends of the era and its relations with the environments. Such being its importance, the young generation has a close relationship with its society.
A Bright and orderly social atmosphere is not only prerequisite to creation of healthy and sound people but also a good foundation for guidance and promotion of college students, the
masters of the morrow.
Fortunately, we live in a democracy, but unfortunately are referred to as an underdeveloped nation. Due to the territorial division, the Hostilities broke out, thereby compelling us to undergo long bloodshed, destruction, terror and starvation. The war plunged our spiritual life into confusion and disorder, which are still continuing, but are recovering reason and order, along with economic rehabilitation, thanks to ai from the free nations.
Nevertheless, young sensitive college students are alays worried about the social climate aggravated by the unhealthy idealogy of the established generations and the thoughtless trends of some politicians. The remote couse of this social situation is the neighboring powers, pressure and invasions, and its immediate cause our present economic difficulty which brought forth instability to the society and corruption to officialdom. Becouse of the economic insufficienty, we cannot get rid of the brand of underdevelopment, and the society is stagnant and becoming more and more desert.
One thing very important, we should renew our view one young collegians adaption to realities.
While our intellectual aspect has made a remarkable proress-even comparable to that of any other nation-since the liberation from the Japanese rule in 1945, our moral aspect has been scarcely promoted. Intellectual development is of course important, but we cannot do away with the traditional oriental ethics and morals.
The unstable economy on one hand makes the society desert, and on the other makes the "dangerously" sensitive college students worried about their future and independence in the course of cultivating themselves. Their high sensitiveness in the midst of the society lacking cooperation and morals is worth worrying about.
Recent Japanese publications reported spiritual movements called "make better country" and "make better people" compaigns, initiated by Japanese professors in coordination with the head of their government, in view of the Japanese social trends excessively Leaning toward the western individualism or egotism but lacking oriental ethics, despite their economic prosperity.
In consideration of their unfavorable environments, the Korean college students need resonable guidance so that they may correctly cultivate themselves. A special guidance center should be set up for them, or the existing guidance center of each university and college should be fully utilized to help them promote not only their intellect but also their low-abiding habit, ethics and patriotism.
With this expectation, this paper is to review the life of modern college students from a adolescent psychological point of view, and to emphasize the importance of their charactereducation as well as counseling.
The contents of character education for college students are herein classified into psychological, theoritical and moral aspects; various problematic points involved in the character education of college students and conditions necessary for analysis are set forth.
As mentioned above, many difficult problems are involved in the character education of college students, which is of great significance in the national point of view, for are the college students of today not the masters of the morrow? The rise or fall of a nation will entirely depend on them. In this sence, the educational system of a nation has a great bearing on the national character, and thus in turn on its future.
A faculty, formed of professors, alone cannot fully undertake the character education of young collegians. Even provided that they have had good education at primary, middle and high school, good guidance still is necessary for them to make sound connection with the society. The number of students per population is unusually great in this country, despite our economic underdevelopment. We can hardly subsist without a great amount of foregin aid every year, but the college enrolment is on the increase yearly. The quantitative growth of enrollment is on the increase yearly.
The quantitative growth of enrollment is good, but the possible quantitative degradation of college students is noted with regret. Experts and interested notables ascribe this trend to the following three reason: First, the Government policy-education system - is irrational.
Second, defects are involved in school management.
Third, the popular zeal for schooling is almost foolishly great.
Except a fe national universities and financially stable privately universities and colleges which were established before the Liberation of 1945 with donations from charitables, most of the others, with little financial support, have been and are operated solely with tuitions and other charges collected by the students.
To collect the greater amount of money from their students, it had been a must for universities and colleges to enroll an many students as possible. This consequently placed more emphasis on the "mass production" of college graduates rather than on the qualitative education of students. Also, to justify the great amount of money collected from students, Universities and colleges were compelled to build mammoth buildings instead of paying professors adequately and getting better professors.
Parents should send their son and doughter to school within the limits of their household budget. But most of the Koreans sent their son and daughter to colleges. even selling away their farmlands or other properties. But their son and daughter expensive schooling only made them poor.
Therefore, college education should be shifted from the previous "more college students" policy to "qualitative, sound, moral people-making education". It should grow future leaders,
who can exercise their ability to the maximum. Also, professors should not limit themselves to their major subjects but should share life their students to guide them with understanding and love.
