한국인의 중의적 영어문장 분석 처리 = Korean L2 English Learners' Parsing of Structurally Ambiguous English Sentences
This study investigated Koreans' reading strategies of English sentences that contain locally ambiguous prepositional phrase(PP) in the VP-NP-PP construction, in which the PP can ambiguously be attached to either the VP or the NP (here, the former is called VP attachment, and the latter NP attachment). This is typically analyzed by two separate parsing decisions: one is syntax only approach, and the other lexical process. In the syntax only approach, parsing decisions are guided by only syntactic principles, whereas the lexical process suggests that the parers are influenced by the lexical information as well as syntactic principles, when comprehending sentences. Frazier proposed a syntactic processing principle called Minimal Attachment, which states that initial syntactic decisions will favor the structure with the minimum number of nodes (here VP attachment). Rayner etc. proved it by eye movement tracking, saying that L1 English natives preferred VP attachment.
Syntactic priming in sentence production was investigated to detect the preference of PP attachment, and the subjects in this study were divided into three groups according to their English fluency level: one between 9th and 10th grade (group 1), another in 11th within top 23% at the English exam (group 2), and the other in university (group 3). After self-paced reading of pairs of sentences that have the same syntactic structure, participants were to choose between VP attachment and NP attachment structure. In Experiment 1, prime sentences were presented with structurally ambiguous VP-NP-PP sentences, and in the target sentences, readers could choose either VP attachment or NP attachment structure. In Experiment 2, prime sentences were presented with 5 VP attachment and NP attachment sentences each, and each one was followed by 3 target sentences with same structure: one has no shared lexical information (target 1), another has the same NP (target 2), and the final one has the same VP with the prime sentence (target 3).
The result of Experiment 1 showed that participants in all the groups preferred VP attachment structure, but the rate of preference in group 1 was relatively lower, compared to those of the other groups. In Experiment 2, there was no significant prime effect in the group 1. However, strong prime effect was observed in the group 2 and 3. Particularly, repeated verb(VP) in target sentences led to much greater prime effects, even though repeating noun (NP) didn't affect the prime effect; it even lowered the effect.
To sum up, these results firstly imply that the group 1 couldn't parse the sentences, but the other groups can. It matches the argument made by Rah and Adone (2008). In their study, advanced and intermediate learners showed highly native-like on-line processing of PP attachment ambiguities and no direct evidence for L2 specific-processing strategies. Secondly, these showed that stronger priming occurs if the prime and target contain the same verb.
These experiments demonstrate that Koreans perform a complete syntactic parsing of sentences when reading in the second language, and they do so in a manner similar to native speakers. Furthermore, lexical information provided by the verb can apparently influence parsing in the second language, and it is consistent with Minimalist Program.
