The objective of this study, which applies the multiple-disciplinary approach to the developmental characteristics of children, is to study and develop a class model that can be applied to actual kindergarten and preschool classes. For this purpose, this study proposes teaching and learning methodologies for children based on English children’s tales to help make the English education of children more effective and efficient.
Furthermore, this study applies a class model based on the multiple-intelligence approach to actual preschoolers and kindergarteners and analyzes the effects of such application so thatsuitable teaching methods for the English education of Korean children can be found.
The main question of this study is: Are there differences in the linguistic capacities of the test group participating in the multiple-intelligence activities using English children’s tales and the control group?
1-1. Are there differences in reading ability between the test group and the control group?
1-2. Are there differences in listening ability between the test group and the control group?
1-3. Are there differences in speaking ability between the test group and the control group?
1-4. Are there differences in writing ability between the test group and the control group?
To determine how the class model based on the multiple-intelligence approach and English children’s tales affect the intelligence of children, this study ran a t-test. Statistics were analyzed using SAS 9.1, and verified at the significance level of 5%.
The experiment of applying the class model, developed using English children’s tales and the multiple-intelligence approach, had the following effects on the reading, listening, speaking, and writing abilities of the children:
First, the class model, combining the linguistic and individual comprehensive intelligences of the multiple-intelligence approach, helped children improve their reading abilities. This was evident in the activities conducted under the class model, including reading the first syllable of main words, reading frequently appearing vocabularies and stories, speaking traffic rules, and making mini-books.
Second, activities based on the physical-athletic and musical intelligences of the multiple-intelligence approach?namely, dancing to the tunes of the stories told, making wheel shapes using the body, singing along the songs featured in stories and distinguishing between different sounds of various horns?conducted under the class model helped children improve their listening abilities.
Third, activities combining the spatial and logical-mathematical intelligences of the multiple-intelligence approach also had effects on the speaking abilities of the children. Such activities as making buses using empty milk cartons and other materials, organizing objects according to their sizes, and so forth had positive effects on children’s speaking abilities.
Fourth, activities combining the interpersonal and nature-exploratory intelligences of the multiple-intelligence approach, such as making traffic maps, rolling tires, and studying local transportation methods, had positive effects on children’s writing abilities.
The English-education class model for preschoolers and kindergartners based on the multiple-intelligence approach has the following significances:
First, various activities based on the multiple-intelligence approach are important methods of children-oriented education advanced by the Sixth Children’s Curriculum, helping children grow their independence and creativity.
Second, various activities developed by this study on the basis of the multiple-intelligence approach to promote children’s reading, listening, speaking, and writing abilities helped children improve their linguistic capacities, improve creativity, and remain motivated, which was reinforced by the differences found between the test group and the control group.
