열린 유신론에 대한 비판적 고찰 = A Critical Review on Open Theism

The purpose of this article is to make a critical review on open theism, also called as neo-theism raised recently in American evangelism. Open theism is evangelical in that it advocates the inerrancy of Holy Scripture. There is discrepancy between open theism and classical theism, for the former advocates literal interpretation of some passages concerning God`s repentance whereas the latter admits anthropomorphic interpretation of them. Open theists try to reinterpret the concepts of immutability and omniscience. Open theism suggests that it recovers the balance between immanence and transcendence, but I think that it tends to emphasize the immanence of God too much. Open theism suggests that there is difference between itself and process theology, for it approves that God, infinite Creator, created the world ex nihilo, exists in itself and is omnipresent whereas process theology disapproves creatio ex nihilo. Open theism, however, is common similarity to process theology in that its God exists only in time. According to open theism free-will is incompatible with determinism. I think that this suggestion has a unjustified presupposition that human desire and inclination is totally free and that human freedom is libertarian. Holy Scripture, however, does not look upon human desire and inclination as autonomous. The unbiblical concept of American libertarian freedom has influenced on open theism. Some contributions of open theism, however, should be noted. It tries to bridge over some gaps between theory and practice, namely between theological studies in academic schools and biblical studies in local churches. It confirms that theological studies should be made for believers in Christian communities. Open theism has tried to settle some gaps between theoretical studies and practical lives, for example life of prayer. Classical theism should reconsider these gaps with caution.
