혜암 이장식 교수의 종말론적 희망의 역사관

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이장식 교수의 역사관은 “종말론적 희망의 역사관”이라 요약할 수 있다. 이 역사관은 단지 다양한 역사 이해를 비교해보는 것이 아니라, 희망이 보이지 않는 현재의 위기 상황 속에서 새로운 종말론적 희망을 발견하고자 한다. 이 역사관은 실증주의적 역사 이해와 관념론적 역사 이해로 대별되는 “일반사학의 역사 이해”와 구별된다. 실증주의적 역사 이해는 현상적 사건에 대한 “과학적 역사 이해”를 그 특징으로 가진다면, 관념론적 역사 이해는 “현상적 사건보다는 사건 안에 있는 이념의 파악을 중요시하여, 과거 역사의 사실을 순전히 오늘의 역사가의 해석에 의존한다.
두 가지 사관의 공통된 문제점은, “어떤 영원한 사실을 찾아서 그것을 불변의 것으로 확립”하고자 하며, 과거의 역사에 대한 연구를 통해 얻은 역사의 법칙을 역사 전체의 법칙으로 간주하며, 역사의 여건이나 조건(condition), 역사의 연속성을 중요시함으로써, 역사의 새로움(Novum)을 제시하지 못하는 데 한다.
이에 반해 이장식 교수의 종말론적 희망의 역사관은 다음과 같은 특징을 가진다:
1. 조건보다 때(Kairos vs. Condition), 연속보다는 종말(Eschaton vs. Continuity). 종말론적 역사 이해는 과거에 일어난 사건들의 조건과 원인을 파악함으로써, 역사의 무시간적 법칙이나 연속성을 찾는 일에 관심을 갖지 않는다. 오히려 “역사를 종말과 새 시대의 시작으로” 이해하고자 한다.
2. 역사의 법칙보다는 역사의 주(Lord of History vs. Law of History). 역사의 영원한 법칙이나 연속성을 찾기보다, 역사 전체에 대한 하나님의 섭리와 주권을 드러내고자 한다.
3. 절망이 아니고 희망(Hope vs. Despair), 영원한 과거가 아니고 영원한 현재(Eternal Now vs. Eternal Past). 영원히 변하지 않는 역사의 어떤 법칙을 발견하고 이 법칙에 따라 역사를 설명하지 않는다. 오히려 현재 그리스도인들의 삶과 공동체 안에서 현재화되는 동시에 역사의 미래로 머물러 있는 하나님 나라를 드러내고, 하나님 나라에 대한 희망을 이야기한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The understanding of the history of Prof. Chang Sik Lee can be summarized as an eschatological understanding which has the hope for the future of the Kingdom of God as its substance. This understanding does not consist merely in the comparison of the different understandings on history, but in the trying to find the new eschatological hope in the present crisis situation of history. It is different from the general understanding on history of secular science of history which consists in the positivistic understanding of history which has the scientific understanding on the phenomenal events of history as its main character, and the ideological understanding of history which will find a spiritual idea in according to the subjective interpretation of the historian himself.
The common problem of both secular understandings of history lies in the trying to find in history certain eternal fact and to establish it as the unchangeable; it believes the rule of history, which is gained through the studying of history, as the rule of history in whole, shows no Novum of history because of the given condition and continuity of history as his presupposition.
Against those secular understandings of history Prof. Chang Sik Lee shows the main characteristics of his eschatological understanding on history in the following three themes.
1. Kairos vs. Condition, Eschaton vs. Continuity: The eschatological understanding has not interested in finding the conditions or causes of history or to catch the eternal rule and continuity of history as a whole. Its main interest consists in the interpretation of history as Kairos or Eschaton and the beginning of new eschatological time.
2. Lord of History vs. Law of History: The eschatological understanding of history does not find the eternal law or continuity of history, but the government and providence of God for whole history.
3. Hope vs. Despair, Eternal Now vs. Eternal Past: The eschatological understanding of history does not proclaim the despair for history but the hope on the Kingdom of God which is already present in the faith and Church Community of Christians, at the same time remains as the future of history; its main interest does not lie in the interpretation of the historical events in whole past of the world, but in the presence of the Kingdom of God which includes the whole ecological world of nature.
